MikeC's answer is right on. Everybody's still fishing. I'm not familiar with "Durant" but if that's Hatteras, I can't give you very specific info on species caught in Hatteras at that time. I operate a Charterboat out of Wanchese, and the fleets that use Oregon Inlet don't always catch the same fish. In late October we are really targeting Tuna. In Hatteras I would say Offshore they still have good catches of Dolphin, Wahoo, King Mackerel, but Tuna would be more scattered or the smaller Blackfins. In the Sound you should have Drum, Trout, Flounder along with small bottom fish. If your looking for Wreck/Bottom fishing those fish are heavily regulated by Federal Regulations, both Seasons and Bag Limits. Many "Tasty" fish will be out of season or catches heavily restricted.
I'm going to take this a bit further. I read your post "Between the lines" and I get the idea it's only 2 people or maybe only your husband. If so, you may be looking for a Make-up Charter, where you split the cost of a trip with other people. The cost of chartering a boat just for one or two may be prohibitive for you. Offshore Make-up Charters can run from $275 to $350 per person without the Mates Gratuity and Fish Cleaning Services. That's based on 6 people. Inshore it could be $60 to $100 per person depending on boat, fishing and number of people. Make-up Charters are not always available. Make-up charters are not an everyday business and generally are put together at the last minute. Very rare to have more than a weeks confirmation. They are used to fill in a boats open dates. No Charter boat waits for random people to come along. In the Fall Make-ups become scarce because the big vacationer influx is gone. Most Marinas put together Make-up Charters. Assuming you are staying in Hatteras, Call the three big Hatteras marinas: Hatteras Harbor, Teaches Lair and Odens Dock. There may be one other option and that is the Miss Hatteras Headboat. A Headboat takes up to 50 people for a specific price "Per Head" Depending on the type of trip it could be $50 to $125 per person. Once again assuming you are in Hatteras that's where you will fish out of. The Northern part of Hatteras Island (Rodanthe, Waves and Salvo) can travel North to the three "Northern" marinas (OBX Marina, Oregon Inlet Fishing Center and Pirates Cove). I hope this info helps. Have fun and leave one fish for me.
