Coquina Beach across from the Bodie Island Lighthouse. Lots of parking, changing rooms, a nothing but beautiful sand and surf.

Not me. But old friends of mine haul in there from Wanchese/Manteo to park and ride the area.

As a longtime local resident and 25 yearvacationer before that to me the ocean is the ocean. To me just sitting and swimming at the KH Lillian St beach access is heaven. Why would i travel down to Coquina or up to Corolla. Naturally as a vacationer many people look for atmosphere, isolation, beach driving and a lot of other things. Just as many people come here and expect all sorts of entertainment. The Outer Banks is an Ocean Beach and the Ocean is its star attraction. Snorkeling, Coral Reefs, Banana Boats, Beach Restaurants and Band Concerts, Boatdwalks NOT HERE AND I HOPE NEVER. Now if your question is for Natural beauty I would say Pea Island or Ocracoke.

I agree with pickle, both pea island and ocracoke are two beaches that are quite unique. They really impressed me. Even after visiting the OBX for a whole lotta years.

OH, I agree, the beach is the attraction. I decided to retire here because I don't want the boardwalks, etc. I've just gone to whichever beach access was closest to where I stayed on vacation so just wondered if there were some better than others - thanks.

Have you ever been to Coquina?

RE: Locals, what are your favorite beaches?

Been to Coquina many, many times. As a vacationer in the 70's and 80's it was our Headquarters for NPS Activities. Daily activities included Boogie with a Ranger, Fish with a Ranger, Surf with a Ranger, Nighttime Campfires and Beach Walks. How about the NPS Canoe Trips and Seining at Bodie Island. They were great, wow has the NPS "Lost It" Actually NO MONEY! I remember the "Sandcastle" with Childrens Crafts, Nature Programs and actual Ranger child care. Coquina is beautiful, but why should I drive 20 miles when I can walk to the KH Beach. I don't need Atmosphere to enjoy the Beach. To me the Ocean in and of itself is my beautiful place wherever it be. I do think Pea Islands solitude outweighs the "Humans" at Coquina especially when Beach Driving is allowed. Ugh!

Anyway, about Coquina, 33 years ago our Ladies Who Bartend Club would convene at Coquina for our annual suntan marathon. It’s a nice meeting point, the bathhouse and parking are excellent and IMHO the beach is superb.

My usual Beach was at first street KDH which was also excellent but different. I quite enjoyed the 4x4 of Carova but that’s quite different. And so is the beach in front of Creeds Hill. Each unique in their own way...

One summer I took the kids for a whole week on Ocracoke and it rained and poured an flooded and the Yankees started getting nervous. So I checked the Doppler Radar and there was Cape Hatteras poking out of the dreary rain clouds. I packed us up and off we went and had a lovely day at lighthouse beach! It was still raining when we got back to Ocracoke. Lol

Any NH beach works for us... we like to switch around
Coquina on Sundays
Pea Island when we want to be alone
Hatteras when we want a "vacation day"
Ocracoke when we want a long "vacation day"

although today ANY place on the beach was outstanding. warm green/blue water, soft waves, no bugs, slight wind... doesn't get much better
