Fishing Portsmouth Island

Have some friends that want to do a guys weekend next Spring on Portsmouth Island. Know it is primitive and you need bug spray, lots of bug spray. With that said, anyone ever fished it for a few days? Thoughts? Recommendations?

RE: Fishing Portsmouth Island

It is fun but very doable. I suggest you consider it like an overland expedition, it is in NO WAY a simple ferry ride and a few days at the beach.
I will also suggest you plan to go from Morris marina out of Atlantic NC, the owner Rick martin will tell you the best time(s) to go and what to bring.

RE: Fishing Portsmouth Island

Are you planning on taking the ferry from Atlantic? Are you going to camp or renting one of the cabins?

I've never fished Portsmouth or even stayed a night, but we did visit in June (ATV tour out of Ocracoke). When researching for that trip I read a bunch of reports and reviews on taking the ferry over and camping or renting one of the cabins. You'll want to plan both well in advance. It sounds like fun, but won't be a simple trip.

The bugs are usually not that bad on the beach, but can be really bad off the beach.

Here's the website Alexy mentions.

There is a Facebook page on Fishing Portsmouth. I have never gone but it is on my bucket list.

Thanks much for the info and the links. Great information to share with my buddies. We certainly understand that it is a "primitive" trip but we have all camped primitive on many occasions. I like the thought of the cabins though. Not as young as I used to be!! Other than some internet research and talking to the Captain I go offshore with, who fishes it every year, I was not sure where to start. Figured there would be some good info from folks on this site. Thanks again!

Let us know how it was if you go.

Bugs, bugs, and more bugs... large and hungry. Seriously, it is a beautiful place but big greenheads, gnats, and mosquitoes (not to mention ticks) are all quite plentiful and you'll need to expect them.
