Sand Fleas on Fall?

Sand Fleas on Fall?

We are making our now yearly fishing trip to the Outer Banks in October. I like to catch my own bait. I found good spot for finger mullet but couldn't find sand fleas last year. Are they in the surf in fall or are they more of a summer time thing?

Slim pickings in many areas. the cold winter and Beach nourishment did not help.

Right now you can find all you need, just walk the waters edge and look for dead and parts. I would start at South Nags Head.

He's coming in October. I've been coming to fish in the fall for a long time and haven't been able to find many. Couldn't find any in the surf last November. There's not a lot of info on these little guys hibernating but I think they do dig deeper in colder weather vs summer when they are on exposed on the shore after a wave retreats, digging themselves back in.

I was beginning to wonder if I'd lost my sanity lol...turns out they must simply have not been there.

RE: Sand Fleas on Fall?

Go get some fishbites sand flea. They actually last longer than a real sand flea and I have great luck using them on a floro rig for pomps and mullet.

I have frozen sand fleas that I caught myself. Especially good are the fleas with the orange eggs on them. Or the Fishbites fleas work well too.

How well do the frozen sand fleas work? I've never done that. I've also never used Fishbites, but from a couple of the threads on here I'm going to have to give them a try.

There were plenty of sand fleas on the beach I was on in Hatteras Village in late June. I didn't even bother to collect them. I just went into the water and grabbed one when I needed one.

Good luck on your fishing trip in October. Leave a few for me!

John

We stayed in Avon the last two weeks in October last year and had no issues at all finding sand fleas. Second the motion about digging a little deeper, they're there, just make sure you've got a heavy duty sand flea rake.

Frozen sand fleas work very well we use them in the sound for catching Sheepshead and anything else that's on the reefs. We also use them out front in the ocean on the reefs very successfully
