April 20th

April 20th

Hey all, my son and his family will be visiting the week of 4/20. Was wondering what to expect from the surf or maybe the pier. We have fished the summer months with good luck at puppy drum, flounder, and blues, using imitation sand fleas, gotcha plugs, jigs and sand worm. By the way he will be staying in Kitty Hawk. Thanks in advance for the advice. Donny

RE: April 20th

Well the first thing is that the water will be quite cold. April Kitty Hawk Surf temps rarely exceed the high 50's. If your lucky you may get 60???? Anyway, there will be Skates for sure. You should have Blowfish aka Blowtoads or Puffers which are great eating. Now the big question, the species heavily dependent on consistent 58 to 60ish water temps will be Sea Mullet and Trout. I would bet against Flounder and Blues. Lastly, in the old days Croakers would start to show in late April. However in recent years Croaker and Spot have been very disappointing. Fishing should be about the same from Surf or Pier. Good luck and leave one for me.

Thank you very much, that is excellent information

Thanks for the info. How about on the sound side?

RE: April 20th

Okay Soundside, where? My surf post was for beaches above Oregon Inlet. Other than private Docks and lots of marsh or inaccessible areas, there are not too many public fishing accesses in that stretch. Actually, the Northern part of that range, from Southern Shores up has very limited shore fishing opportunities both because of the geographical aspects and availability or lack thereof fish. I would rule out Skate, Blowfish, Sea Mullet from the Ocean Surf mix. The Sound would be Trout and possibly small Stripers. In certain areas there may be Shad (Little Bridge) or some Catfish in Canals. I wish this could be better. In fact the Sound Head Boats (we don't have Ocean going Head boats) really don't start sailing till really late April or early May.

RE: April 20th

For soundside your best bet is the Manteo-Nags Head causeway

RE: April 20th

You might find some big blues they show up in the spring. Here is one from a few years ago in the spring.on Ocracoke

NICE FISH Big grin

As been suggested before, anybody considering serious Surf Fishing in April should plan on fishing Hatteras (not up North on Hatteras) and Ocracoke. Now if you can do Portsmouth Island that would be a real bonus.

We were down 2 yrs ago Easter week which was mid April and fished from private Dock on Kitty Hawk Bay and caught three to four fish each day. Last year we punt two weeks earlier and colder and fished from same pier and never got a stroke all week long. Hoping with Easter later this year we will have better luck...... Fish
