Pontoon Boat For OBX

I sold my 20' DC F225 last fall. I've been thinking about what to replace it with. I was leaning towards a 17'-19' CC. My wife suggested a pontoon boat.

I see a lot of pontoon boats here in the Harbour. No doubt they're ideal for cruising the canals. And I know just like my DC you have to pick your days when venturing into the sound when the wind blowing.

We'd be using the boat for cruising and fishing. Mostly cruising.

Any thoughts?

Why not? Just get a decent sized one. I'm not a pontoon boat person nor am I a cruiser, strictly fishing. A Center Console is your universal boat. Sound wave condition is totally all wind based and where you are

Make sure you get one with a decent sized engine. We went out on a friends one time a few years back...16 foot or so with a 25hp motor. Wind kicked up in the afternoon and it was a long ride home in the waves....over three hours. It was not a pleasant journey.

The Sound at times can get very bad, this body of water is not a river or a pond. If you just going to anchor close to the ramp fine if not I would think about it for a loooong time before you open your wallet.

I understand the need for having adequate horsepower. I know there will be a lot of variables in my asking how wet was the ride back going into the waves?

Aren’t there a couple of pontoon boat rental co ? Perhaps renting one to get the feel of it before buying your own would allay what I’m reading as some questionable reluctance would help.

Very wet! We had waves breaking over the bow and rolling down the length of the pontoon. We just did not have enough horsepower to do any manuevering in the waves. It was on the smaller side for pontoons also....I want to say 16-17 foot maybe.

Water rolling down the deck would be very unsettling for me. I sure my wife would never want to leave the harbour after experiencing that. You're right about a 16'-17' being small. I didn't realize they made them that small.

It seems to me that a pontoon may not be ideal for the sound. I would think that they could catch the wind too much making them hard to handle in wind or rougher weather. I would echo what others said, if possible rent one before you open the checkbook.
