Dinner near Roanoke Island

In 3 weeks we will be staying overnight just east of Roanoke Island, the night before we take our Hatteras rental on Sunday 6/16. We have never stayed in that area and we'll be road weary by the time we arrive from Ohio that Saturday. Where should we grab dinner? Nags Head and Roanoke Island... also, we'll be looking for breakfast the next morning between there and Hatteras (we know Hatteras and Frisco / Buxton pretty well at this point, so just wondering about the towns north of there).

Thanks in advance for your suggestions smiley

"Just East of Roanoke Island" okay that would be on the beach (Nags Head) or possibly at one of the two motels on the Manteo Causeway. You probably have 2 Dozen good restaurants within 10 minutes of where you will be. It all depends on your Budget and What you like to eat. On the Higher ($$$$) end would be Basnight's Lone Cedar, Tale of the Whale, Owens. Then you have the Local's Favorites in Manteo = Darrell's and TL's Family Restaurant both good and reasonable. Also I would recommend Fisheads on the Outer Banks Pier in SNH. Overlooks the beach and water with a not so formal menu. In the middle($$$) you have Sugar Creek, The Dunes, Pamlico Jacks, Millers. I'm sure you are going to get all sorts of recommendations. When you talk about food on the "Connection" What people love others hate. Ennjoy.

RE: Dinner near Roanoke Island

I will make a breakfast suggestion and it is on the way to Hatteras, right next to the entrance to the Park. Sam and Omie's. 7228 S Virginia Dare Trail, Nags Head, NC 27959. Best breakfast on the Island! Enjoy!

RE: Dinner near Roanoke Island

Our go to for food on Roanoke Island is Darrells. We haven't been south onto Hatteras Island in years so can't help there. Good luck and have a great time.

Blue Water Grill in the Pirates Cove Marina which is about 1.5 miles east of Manteo. Great food!!

Swamp Duck nailed it. Come early. If you arrive after 0900 most likely you will have to wait for a table. Good service and not expensive.

Last year after we left the aquarium we stopped at Darrell’s on our way back to our rental. We were all very happy. One of the old time places but it was better then many other places

Great suggestions all! I have to second Sam *& Omie's for breakfast and Fish Head on the OBX FIshing Pier for dinner.

RE: Dinner near Roanoke Island

We've been visiting the OBX for over 30 years and two of our favorite places in that area are Tail of the Whale, and Sugar Creek (my fav).

RE: Dinner near Roanoke Island

You've gotten many good recommendations. I haven't been to all of them, but of all mentioned my favorites are The Blue Water Grill right past the light into Pirate's Cove...and I do love Fish Heads at the Outer Banks Pier - you can't get any closer to the ocean! These two couldn't be farther apart in the food department but each has their own pull... Be sure to check who is open for dinner on Sunday. One handy thing is that Blue Water Grill does take reservations which can be VERY helpful during the season...which I believe has already begun. Fish

RE: Dinner near Roanoke Island

TL's in Manteo has the best western omelet and home fries I have ever had in my life!! Reasonable too.

RE: Dinner near Roanoke Island

If you are talking about the causeway area, I would vote for Tale of the Whale or a little farther north at Millers Waterfront. Tale of the Whale is our preferred place when it's just me and the wife. Millers Waterfront is where we go with the whole family. The staff is great, food is superb and priced fair. Our waitress, a teacher during the rest of the year, once told our kids to run, not walk, thru the dining area to see the sunset from the deck. Basnights was awful the one time we went there. Food was overpriced, under-cooked, hot items cold, cold items hot and the staff was below standard, especially the manager who was very unprofessional.

RE: Dinner near Roanoke Island

I will echo a few of the standouts here.

Blue Water Grill... hands down the best restaurant on this end of the beach if you're a foodie and budget is of no concern. Get reservations. Their sister restaurant, Blue Moon, just up 158 from the hospital is also a winner.

Fish Heads... beachy pub grub with fresh fish and the best beach vibe. This place gets busy and street parking is often the only option unless you're an early bird. If mobility is an issue be prepared for a light walk from the street up their lot to the entrance.

Other places nearby...

Stripers in Manteo has good food and a nice location.

Lone Cedar is marginal, at best, yet somehow has a fan following. I've never had a superb experience here, but the views of the sound are nice and they can accommodate larger groups if that applies.

Owens is good, but a little pricey for what you get. This place is chock full of OBX history and for that reason alone we hit it every few years.

Sugar Creek is your run of the mill broiled/fried stuff. It's not bad, but not a standout to me. It has its place if that's what you're in the mood for. The location is nice. Don't ask for outdoor seating if you see the septic pump truck in the lot, just sayin'.

Lost Colony Brewery and Cafe in downtown Manteo. This place used to be excellent when it was Full Moon Cafe, but the owners have been primarily focused on the brewery in recent years it seems. The location is really nice though if you're looking to walk around the Manteo waterfront before/after dinner.

Avenue Waterfront Grille in downtown Manteo. We somehow just discovered this place a month ago and it was a winner. We've only been once and we'll be back. I'd pick this place over Lost Colony if in downtown Manteo.

RE: Dinner near Roanoke Island

Yes - The Avenue Grill right down overlooking the waterfront in Manteo is excellent. Thanks so much for adding that one in to your response, Mstaszew! They redid the place about a year ago and it's quite nice - there's also outside seating. Thumbs up

[/QUOTE ]I agree with Mike. You won't be disappointed at Darrell's but they're closed on Sundays.

RE: Dinner near Roanoke Island

I'd leave early and have breakfast at Oceanas in Avon.

RE: Dinner near Roanoke Island

Nags Head Pierhouse for breakfast to get in the mood, it’s not about the food!

Lots of dinner options, Lucky 12 is across from NH Pier. Ortega’z SW bar and grill in Manteo downtown gets rave reviews from locals. Tortugas Lie in NH is a standard classic. Go off peak as it can be packed.

RE: Dinner near Roanoke Island

Yes - Ortega'z is really, really good. Love Ortega'z and so does Guy Fieri - especially their fish tacos! This is Southwestern - not "Mexican". Great location - some outdoor seating too, but unfortunately not open on Sundays. Sad smiley
