RE: How well does your garden Grow ?

Nice hall!

I just pulled 5 good sized zucchinis today (see below). I only reason I pulled them was because there's 10 others coming in. I usually plant 4 and 2 of them don't make it. Well, all 4 made it this year. We still have some zucchini bread from last summer (frozen), but we're about to stock up again. I have a zucchini cookbook that I've never looked at. Time to look.

Earlier this spring, I was pulling sugar snap peas as an early crop. Still have some in the fridge. My broccoli, lettuce and carrots were doing really well until I went on vacation. When we came back, 6 days later, the broccoli and lettuce were gone and only a few carrots left. I was pissed because this was the first time that I actually had broccoli that was ready to pick. I doubled up on the chicken wire last week.

My green beans have gone crazy, so I'm hoping for a good hall. I can those for the rest of the year. We only have a couple jars from last summer left.

Onions are doing great as are my tomatoes. All still green, but we're going to be overloaded soon. Cucumbers are doing good as well. There's one ready to pick, but I haven't pulled it yet.

This spring I redid my raised garden. I replaced 4 4x4 beds with 3 4x8 beds, mainly because the board were way to soft. So now I have 4 4x8 beds with fresh soil. I also put in a timed drip irrigation system. Mainly because I'm lazy...

I didn't get to plant cut flowers this year. Between work, daughter graduation, and vacation (Yellowstone), I never had a chance to.

We have one cucumber so far. We had so much rain early in the season, our son graduated from HS, then vacation, my husband is a beekeeper and caught several swarms that had to be taken care of, and so many other things going on, we didn't put a garden in this year. We do have a couple of tomato plants and one cucumber plant, but that's it. My husband is planning to plant a few fall things, but we'll see; we've never done that before. On the bright side, he harvested 39 lbs of honey with more to be done soon, and our peach tree is doing pretty well. The cold got to several of the blooms, but there are still plenty of big peaches that will be ready to pick soon.

Those zucchini look great!

I'll trade you some veggies for honey 2boysmom! That's something I've always wanted to do, but wouldn't even know where to start.

I'd love to, but we can't keep honey, that stuff goes like gold!

My husband has a tendency to......go VERY big when he gets a new hobby. He got into beekeeping as a side trip from needing beeswax to make a finish for a box he made for his grandma. He asked a family member of a friend who kept bees for the was and the next thing I knew, he had a hive. He swore it wasn't going to get out of hand, but 2 years later, he has 33 hives, has started a beekeeping association in our area, and is the (paid) county hive inspector. He makes beeswax candles, lotion bars and chapstick and has an observation hive that he takes to 4H clubs to teach the kids. Oh, and he has made a batch or two of mead (sp?), but he needs to work on that, it was nasty!

hoi toide, your flowers are beautiful!

Picture of the garden.

On the right are cucumbers. On the left are 4 tomato plants (4th of July, lemon drop, super sauce, steak house). That empty plot in the middle is where I used to have beautiful lettuce, carrots, and broccoli.

Further out are onions (red, white, and yellow), 2 pepper plants (Dragon Cayenne and Diablito), 4 zucchinis and the rest are green beans (blue lake 274).

J4ydubs, any idea what got your broccoli, lettuce and carrots?

No proof, but I didn't see any big holes or gaps in the fence, so I'm guessing baby bunnies. It's the right time of year and they can slip through even small fences. They ate a ton of leaves though, so I'm not sure.

When I got back I did find a ground hog near the fence, but I couldn't find any entry under the fence.

Today’s teeny tiny watermelon

And the butterfly garden aspect. The neighbors bee’s should be following soon...

RE: How well does your garden Grow ?

Today's haul. Various cherry and cocktail tomatoes, cubano and poblano peppers. I think those poblanos will make some nice chili rellenos. I've also made a couple batches of spicy garlic pickles with our pickling cukes. All have been grown in pots on the deck.

RE: How well does your garden Grow ?

You southern gardeners are cheating! My Mom is harvesting a bunch of stuff now also (in NC). I'm still a good 2 weeks from being over whelmed with veggies.

I'm going to have to put in a greenhouse to keep up! I'm jealous with the watermelon Hoi. I haven't made the room needed for melons. Maybe next year the garden expands a little.

RE: How well does your garden Grow ?

Wow, I love this thread. Everything looks great. I especially love the zinnias with butterfly and in the Fiesta Ware glass. Now that we've downsized my gardening is in deck pots. The Red Sails lettuce was wonderful all spring long and now that pot contains zinnias from seed. Herbs are doing beautifully and our kitty really has been enjoying his cat nip plant. Not growing tomatoes in pots so I go to the county farmers market for locally grown seasonal veggies. Here's a pic of the heirloom tomato pie I made from market purchase last week. Great gardening tips, thanks y'all.

Omg, I forgot the catnip plantings from seed. I’ll have to get a pic of my pussy!

I’ve never grown it before, but the seeds in the packet said catnip and were sown separately, then transplanted into that container.
