I am cracking up...this is like the Pork Roll's official induction to the OBC Hall of Fame. It can officially join our other esteemed members; Butter Roast, Naked Hot Tub, Piping Plovers, Canopy Skeletons, Squids in Pool, and Airing Down. I'm sure I've forgotten others. smiley

RE: Holy Pork Roll......

In my old neighborhood 50 years ago on Long Island it was Taylor Ham. Just a made up name (slang) for Taylor Pork Roll. Yummy!

Don't you disrespect pork roll by having it in the same sentence as spam. Similar, maybe, like a Volt and a Tesla.....both are electric cars.

RE: Holy Pork Roll......

Its North VS South,Taylor ham in North Jersey,Taylor pork roll in South Jersey, and it is delicious.

Is the ‘Taylor Pork Roll’ the Volt or the Tesla in this analogy?

I am still waiting for the Naked Hot Tub explanation.

RE: Holy Pork Roll......

Correct me if I’m wrong. Mr. Taylor did, indeed, first name it Taylor ham, but sometime (maybe in the 60s) the food and drug administration declared it couldn’t be called ham because it was not legally ham, but a prepared meat product...hence came the term pork roll. Still both names are used interchangeably.

RE: Holy Pork Roll......

Who was naked in the hot tub? How many people were naked together in the hot tub? Which hot tub? How much alcohol was involved with the naked hot tub? How old were the naked hot tub participants? Are there pictures?

I could go on, but let’s start there.

This is absolutely true Judy, but since 1906 it has been pork roll. Northern New Jersey folks still live in the early 1900s and call it Taylor ham. They also call coming down to my area to go to the beach as "going down the shore"....figures. There are other producers of pork roll, but none as good as Taylor.

Taylor Pork Roll shop on Asbury Park boardwalk, 1954.

RE: Holy Pork Roll......

Neighbor in central NJ called it Taylor ham. He was from north Jersey.

SPAM is so much better than this salty crap. Big grin Not sure which is worst, scrapple or this pork roll.

I'm glad my wife doesn't read this site. I'd be hit with a hard object.

RE: Holy Pork Roll......

Boy or Boy. You northerners get your panties in an uproll when we talk about BBQ and pizza and then this from y'all. I am surprised Scrapple didn't get mentioned. Spankies in Kitty Hawk gets Taylor Pork Roll now and then and it is quite good. Spam and scrapple are not my favorites for sure!

I for one, am proud to announce I have never eaten SPAM, scrapple, or Taylor Pork Roll.

Now please help me choose which box I should reserve for the symphony this Christmas.

RE: Holy Pork Roll......

I have old cookbooks and typed up scrapple recipes for someone. Gotta love recipes that contain …

"Separate one hog’s head into halves. Remove eyes and brains. Scrape head and clean thoroughly … "

"HEADCHEESE

The hog’s head, heart, tongue, and other meat scraps may be used. Cut hog’s head into four pieces. Remove brain, ears, skin, snout, and eyes. Cut off the fattest parts for lard. Put the lean and bony parts to soak overnight in cold water in order to extract the blood ...

SCRAPPLE

Follow directions for making headcheese until bones are removed and the meat chopped … "
