New ads

I see the new ads popping up and it’s cool with me as Will needs to make a living. But some of them seem a bit much for the crowd. Brooks Brothers? Travel to Abu Daubi?
Maybe the board demo skews higher than I thought

RE: New ads

LOL

I've noticed some popping up on mobile, but they are really weird. "APPLY FOR YOUR H1-B VISA TO WORK IN AMERICA"

I can't imagine there is a large population of undocumented workers on these boards...

Saw another for blood pressure medications, which seemed to be better targeted to this audience (no offense guys).

And a bunch trying to get me to rent a cabin in the smokey mountains.

I'd be interested to hear what others have been seeing.

RE: New ads

a lot of really nice vehicles!!!!

RE: New ads

Do we all see the same ads? Just curious as I have had ads for birdbaths the last week which I have just researched online within the last week.

Doubtful. Ads are “usually” relevant to your browsing history to some degree, but not always. I’ve been seeing lots of shoe ads after searching for new yard boots recently.

RE: New ads

Mine are for sweaters and scarfs, along with rental companies....what I have been searching for in the last week or so.

That begs the question....what have you all been searching for to get adds for expensive cars and work visas OMG smiley Serious smiley Theeth smiley

RE: New ads

Mostly I see ads from Camping World for RV's.

Absolutely no clue. Maybe the ad algorithm is pulling some sort of metadata from news.google.com which I frequent for whatever headlines are trending nationally.

No idea why it's sending me blood pressure meds either, I don't take any medication. Furthermore, I've never gone researching cabins in the woods.

It is a mystery and if they are trying to target me in any meaningful way, they are doing a terrible job of it.

RE: New ads

It’s a whole new world folks. Try talking about a product and the next time you’re online adds for that item pop up on your browser. Don’t let Alexa hear you talking!

RE: New ads

As mentioned, ads may be linked to browsing history.

Someone a barbeque web site I am on was complaining about the dating site ads and other risque ads he was seeing. People commented that he should lay off the porn sites for a while. Theeth smiley

I bought brake cleaner at Autozone this week as my front brake pads are getting to spec and I need to do my brakes soon. I entered my phone number for Autozone rewards card. Came home and an ad popped up for online shopping and brake cleaner was one of the items featured. Just about everything we do these days is tracked. Serious smiley

RE: New ads

My S-I-L works for a big ad company in NYC. I was at her house one day and we were talking about her job and she said "You are just one big cookie to me" and she was not talking the chocolate chip kind. So what you are seeing are your "cookies" and then marketed directly back to you.

RE: New ads

Relying on your browsing history is old school. Your phone, Alexa and other devices track your every word.

RE: New ads

Like Aliphatic, they are off the mark with my ad's. Male enhancement pills. (48 yr old female. No porn browsing lol). Replacement windows. Ohio State merch. Thats probably simply because I am in Ohio, but if cookies are involved it should be Wolverine merch. Also a lot of outdoorsy stuff, deer blinds and camo.

Now that I'm paying attention I'm laughing at how off they are. But I may be an anomaly anyway. I do not have Alexa. No Facebook, etc., so who knows?

RE: New ads

When viewing sites on iOS, at least, each Google Ad has controls at the top right of the ad image. Click the one that looks like a right facing arrow and you get an option labeled "Why this ad?" Clicking it shows why that particular ad was chosen for you. The same ads and option for viewing the "why" is available using Chrome or Safari browser.

I just did 3 ads on obxconnection so far and each had different reasons. Two said based on estimation of my interests. Read into that however you want, but I guess giving Google my data for ~17 years already and they probably know more about me than I do. One said because of browsing history in addition to estimation of my interests. One said "General factors about the placement of the ad, agreed upon by the publisher and the advertiser." along with "Information collected by the publisher. The publisher partners with Google to show ads." I assume those are blanket ads targetting a specific region or the demographics of the audience using a site/service? Dunno.

My wife is big time into using incognito tabs, minimal cookies, constant clearing of browsing data, and anything else she can do. She still gets ads, they are just less relevant to her. Since I've bought nothing, ever, from a website ad I don't care what they show me or how much they know about me.

On my work PC I'm all about blocking ads. I don't have time for them getting in my way. uBlock Origin does an amazing job. I use it with Chrome.

RE: New ads

My point exactly. The way the OP sounded it was just ads that many our leader placed. Quite frankly I don't even notice them. Guess my friend from PA has big travel plans and needs some nice suits.

RE: New ads

There are newly placed ads on obc though which I assume prompted this thread. I see some full screen ones now on iOS that are more of the same, just newly placed as full screen between page views. These are in addition to the inline ads shown between posts of a thread. I haven't seen full screen ads on the PC version of the site yet.

RE: New ads

I feel as if Squid Pro is on base. I have been sitting around recently holding conversations with friends in the privacy of our homes and the next thing I see are advertisements about what we were just speaking about. ????

Alexa is just another data source like browsing history. It all feeds the machine. I wonder how long it’ll be before purchases made with the new Apple card are used as a data source for Apple’s ad service.

RE: New ads

You can turn off the microphone in your privacy settings. I actually don’t mind having things targeted, but then I also use ad blockers and incognito tabs. I bought my latest daily vehicle thru Facebook marketplace and am pleased with the ease of them knowing what I was looking for.

And just think, it all started with bonus cards at grocery stores. The self checkout machine spits out coupons tailored to your past buying habits as soon as you scan your card. They are for similar items, of different brands, that have a higher profit margin than your normal brands.

RE: New ads

No guys, Alexa, Google, or Siri are not listening and using your conversations to feed ad data. They are designed to only trigger recording after the keyword. Do they sometimes pick up more than that? Sure, but that's not the norm.

One of my wife's cousins is a little, umm, weary about technology and the government. He stills buys all his ammo in cash so they can't track it... Anyway, he was adamant that "they" were listening in on his conversations. His "proof" was that he saw an ad on TV for an air fryer just a day after he talked to someone about it. I had to explain that TV ads take time to book and schedule and there's no way possible it could be connected. He still wouldn't believe me. ::sigh::

When something is fresh in your mind, when you see it advertised you notice it more. It's like looking at or buying a new car. You all of a sudden notice that car a lot more when driving around when before you didn't before. People didn't go out and buy that car because you did, you're just more aware of it.

Yup. I paused Ghostery to see what pops up, but then I remembered that I turned off targeted Google ads. Oh well. Here's what I saw.
