Enjoying our winter getaway

My husband and I have been here in KDH for 3 weeks now, with 2 more weeks until we return reluctantly to snowy Maine. This is our first time to N.C.We have traveled from Ocracoke to Corolla and everywhere in between. We have hiked Nag’s Head Woods and Jockey Ridge, walked the beach near the Oregon inlet, toured the Corolla beaches in a 4 wheel drive to see the horses(saw several),walked the boardwalk in Duck, explored the towns of Manteo and Wanchese, shopped numerous thrift stores, and eaten excellent food at several restaurants. The weather has been great - mostly 50’s with a few showers.Today was extremely windy, but not a cold wind. Everyone that we’ve encountered, without exception, has been cordial and welcoming. This forum has been a great resource for us.

Glad you're enjoying it, Sagner! Was Festival Park open this time of the year in Manteo? Did you make it to JK's?

RE: Enjoying our winter getaway

We drove through Festival Park, but no buildings were open and no activities. We planned to go to downtown Manteo tonight for their Friday night celebration of some sort that they have each month, but it was cancelled because the road to Manteo was flooded, and I was told the downtown was flooded too.
We didn’t go to JK’s because our guests wanted to go to Black Pelican. There we all had about the best meal we’ve ever had - very impressed.

RE: Enjoying our winter getaway

Black Pelican is one of our favorites, too.

JK's is a notch above, though, if you get a chance to go. I'm a seafood guy, but Friday night prime rib special is heavenly! I rarely have steak when dining out, but one of our guests from the prior year raved about the prime rib, so I decided to try it. Glad I did it was the most memorable meal I've had anywhere in a long time.

I Got Your Crabs is in an oceanside strip mall on 158 a very wee bit south of Black Pelican. Not the least bit fancy but excellent shellfish/seafood. Owned and operated by a guy who catches the fish fresh during the day. No lobster that I recall, but a bit of a variation on an Maine lobster shack. Paper plate sort of thing. They do take-out.

If you're like many of us, you'll soon be making plans to come back during the warm weather months to see all the things that are closed now!

many years ago, JKs actually turned my husband from a well done steak eater to a medium rare one! LOL. I forget the exact words the waitress used but something like "you need to try steak a different way for the flavor and not completely dead" He didn't even use steak sauce that night. please go and try the restaurant.

RE: Enjoying our winter getaway

Thank you, Sagner
I was visualizing everything as I read your post.
We just booked a stay in Ocracoke in May! I’m so excited! And I’ll be down in August with my son and his family.
I hope you can get back sometime soon in the warmer months!

RE: Enjoying our winter getaway

While I Manteo I hope you visited Kill Devil Distillery. Great spirits produced by a great group of guys!

RE: Enjoying our winter getaway

Sagner
I sure hope you’re still in the Banks and enjoying the fine weather!
Wish I could be there!

RE: Enjoying our winter getaway

One more thing for a true OBX experience....a February No'Easter. Yes, that is a little externe...let's hope you will miss that. But the ocean would be awesome.

RE: Enjoying our winter getaway

So glad you've been enjoying your time down here! Maybe I saw you two, if you were walking along the boardwalk in Manteo in the morning. The downside of this time of year is that many regular activities - including First Friday in Manteo are not happening. Several restaurants in Manteo are closed right now but will reopen on Valentine's Day - that said Ortegaz right downtown near the bookstore is open as is The Blue Water Grill in Pirates Cove.

Hope you've made it to Pea Island!

Banks68- we have 9 more days here..yesterday was like 75 degrees and gorgeous. We walked the beach from 8th Street in KDH for a mile south, and waded for a bit - water was cold but we’re used to ocean water in ME anyway so it wasn’t unbearable.
Wayne - we don’t need a nor’easter here, thank you..we prefer the warm weather..although it is rather chilly today with the wind!
Obxmini - We WERE walking by the shore in Manteo yesterday- did you identify us by our ME plates? We went to Poor Richard’s and had a good lunch on the back porch. The temp dropped suddenly and the wind kicked up,so we brought the rest of lunch home to finish before the rain came.
Our son and fam are arriving tomorrow for 2 days,on their way to a cruise out ofCharlston. They’ve also never been here,so we’ll try to show them the highlights in a condensed version.2 teens who like to hike,so we will definitely go to Jockey Ridge, and then Jennette’s Pier. Last week there,we saw a Pygmy sperm whale that had been found on the beach in KDH.Apparently it was alive when found, then died shortly after. It was in a pickup at the pier and was being taken somewhere for a necropsy. The folks who had it estimated it weighed 600 lbs. Very sad to see it dead.
We are so enjoying the area - we have been all the way from Okracoke to Corolla. We have eaten many good meals - a few being Henry’s,Trio,Barefoot Bernie’s,Kill Devil Grill,Saltbox Cafe.Good biscuits at Biscuits and Porn(very near our rental). We plan to return to Black Pelican next week for a last meal because we loved it so much. We just returned from Crumbl’s to buy some cookies for our kids when they arrive. Thanks to all of you for your help and interest!

Did you try any BBQ? Its good for when you have a crowd and esp teens and kids.. at least in the summer they have family takeout deals. In your area there is High Cotton and Pigmans BBQ places..
