What are the chances?

Our annual family vacation on Hatteras is scheduled to happen on July 25th. Due to that nasty virus, this will be our one and only vacation this year. Reading about new cases in Dare County has me concerned. We intend to hunker down in our rental and try to spend some money while horseback riding, renting boats, ordering in pizza, etc We will respect the residents' health and always wear a mask. and follow the guidelines. In past years, while visiting various towns on Hatteras, we have been evacuated by hurricanes three times. We have dealt with the bridge cutting off power during construction. We have worried about storms causing the highway to flood. Now...we have to worry about yahoos who aren't taking this virus seriously who are causing a potential threat to many families livelihoods and thousands of family vacations. If cases continue to rise and folks don't follow the guidelines what are the chances the Outer Banks will be closed down this summer?

IMO the chances of OBX shutting down will only happen if the virus spikes and the health care system here gets overwhelmed. I see 95%+ following the most recent guidelines. The 5% that don't think the rules don't apply to them. A year+- from now we'll look back and see what worked, what didn't, and what was unnecessary.

Alert, alert, alert...

Trump doesn't wear a mask !!

I don't think he is vacationing on the Outer Banks this year. This should not be a political discussion. Seriously, is it the out-of-towners bringing the virus in and then spreading it to locals who are not following the guidelines? In our area, many stores simply won't let folks in without a mask for the protection of their own employees, is this true in the Outer Banks?

Ignore the people behaving badly here, we try to.

I *personally* don't think they'll close down, but that's just my gut feeling. A lot of restaurants are going back to takeout and delivery only in response to the recent outbreak. Masks are supposed to be mandatory, and hopefully people will be taking it more seriously now.

We went Memorial Day week, and most people in stores were masked, both employees and customers. We stuck to the house and the beach, and hit a couple stores.

Wear your masks and if you go in someplace and aren't happy with the precautions just go somewhere else. Don't let it ruin your vacation.

Oh lord, everything is a political discussion these days lol
If you look at one of the other posts about the virus on here, Dare County said the recent cases were spread amongst locals at an event of some sort.
I was in Salvo last week and the places I went probably had about 50% mask wearers, but I asked this am and was told people are wearing them now...

Glad to hear they are wearing them. If we look at countries that have contained the virus, they started wearing masks at the very beginning. We don't have too many tools to fight the virus and need to use anything that might help. We are confident that we will be fine staying in a rental and following guidelines for the week. Our family has already had a wedding, a European cruise and our lives upended by this virus, we will be devastated if we can go to our wonderful Outer Banks.

I was so happy when they opened in time for us to go this year - I would’ve been devastated as well. I agree with the above poster - Is think it would have to get pretty bad for them to shut down completely again. Enjoy yourself - beaches were secluded and beautiful as always!!

RE: What are the chances?

I guess my statement about Trump not wearing a face mask is "acting badly" !! Leading by example I guess has no value in these times !!!

I too, would love to see the administration embracing social distancing and wearing a mask...frankly, that train has left the station. Truly, this virus never should have been politicized as it has caused divisions in the response when we should have been united in fighting it. I just posted this question to determine if we should be prepared to be disappointed.

RE: What are the chances?

Obviously no one can predict this, but my gut feeling is that no, the Outer Banks will not close to visitors by July 25th.

RE: What are the chances?

I have reservations for Sept and now I give it a 50 -50 chance of happening. There is no reason the President can't set an example that helps here .

I too have a reservation for September and I think 50/50 odds is generous for us.

None of these politicians do. I watched Gov Wolf and his friend the Health Secretary preach masks bare-faced for months on end. It’s do as I say not as I do

RE: What are the chances?

We're in the same boat, Nashna, for the same time period. Best guess is that it will get worse than it is now, but not by enough to close OBX, given the recent face mask requirement. TBD. Better late than never on the face masks.

No publicly reported cases in Hatteras yet, but Buxton has a few, all in the last few days.

RE: What are the chances?

There are already 5 restaurants closed because of employees with the virus.

Curious...50/50 because you might cancel, or you think OBX will close?

We cancelled our June and September reservations. It was the right decision for us.

RE: What are the chances?

For me it's 50-50 they will close or restrict entrance in some way .

Because obx will close or a hurricane will hit.

They are closed to be tested, and are there 5 or just a couple?

RE: What are the chances?

I’d very much like to be wrong about that. I wish the pandemic will go away right now. I wish the upcoming hurricane season will totally miss the Outer Banks.

Unfortunately, I don’t have Aladdin’s Lamp I can rub to summon the Genie and start making wishes.
