Decision makers will meet again on Sunday morning, August 2 to receive an updated briefing from the National Weather Service and determine whether protective measures are necessary for Evacuation Zone B which covers areas north of Oregon Inlet, including the towns of Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head, Manteo, and all unincorporated areas including Roanoke Island and the Dare mainland. What a joke. This thing is weakening by the hour.

RE: Hatteras Mandatory Evacuation At Noon Today.

Good call with all the visitors down this year. They can't risk mega traffic jams that would block evacuation.
I'm very concerned about the possible inland flooding if it shifts to the west. Remember Hurricane Florence, and all the flooding in Fayetteville

I can tell you have not watched or dealt with hurricanes much to say something that silly. Warm water is ahead so you know what that means, or could mean. Remember a couple years ago when one made a left turn? Remember in 2012 when Sandy made a left turn to NJ? They are unpredictable but saying it is a joke is Loser

sure not the strongest we've had... wonder how many residents will be evacuating?

Do tell us what your expertise is to decide that evacuation is not necessary.

I'm not who you are addressing but I'll answer anyway. I've been staying in Avon for about three weeks every Summer since 1977. I wouldn't even consider bringing in the deck chairs for a storm this fast moving and low strengthed.

RE: Hatteras Mandatory Evacuation At Noon Today.

I'm sure that there are a lot of unhappy visitors heading to Hatteras today only to have to turn around as soon as they get here. May need to grab an inland hotel for a couple of nights. Heavier than usual traffic I'm sure both today and tomorrow. Ugh.

You certainly do have longevity for visitation. However, there are alot of folks who don't and they need to heed the evac orders. Flooded roads, no power and inability to leave the island is NOT where you want to be.

Likely very few, as usual.

RE: Hatteras Mandatory Evacuation At Noon Today.

Looks like a repeat of Hurricane/Tropical Storm Hanna path and strength in 2008. I was up on the Eastern Shore of VA at a bachelor weekend for a friend. We played golf as the eye passed over. It was a little wet.

Hatteras shrugged it off. As I recall there was no mandatory evacuation.
An evacuation at checkin time on a Saturday will create a lot of interesting things to see.

RE: Hatteras Mandatory Evacuation At Noon Today.

Do they block Rt 12 south of Nags Head for incoming traffic if they ordered the evacuation?

RE: Hatteras Mandatory Evacuation At Noon Today.

I think the real reason for today's evacuation order is "change day" timing. The county would prefer not to have a new crop of visitors coming onto the island Saturday and Sunday. The storm is too far away to really know what it's going to do, but Saturday morning is a convenient time for the county to issue its evacuation order to keep numbers on the island lower. It's better to have fewer people on the island when the storm gets closer and realistic assessments can be made, just in case it becomes a real threat.

RE: Hatteras Mandatory Evacuation At Noon Today.

i have mixed feelings about the whole thing. The timing of the order was awful. You have families with children on the road or already there told to leave. It could have been done Friday night before the Saturday and Sunday check ins. For instance we drive 11 hrs. thats a distance to be told sorry we"re closed!. Im older so I plan for everything but there are families that just had their hopes of some kind of stress relief vacation plans ruined if this storm turns out to be nothing much. I have sympathy for all those travelling with disappointed children. things like this do affect future vacation plans away from the OBX for some. Sorry Im tired from working night shift but I felt a need to express the family side after all this covid 19 mess,

Sorry folks we're closed....the moose out front should have told ya!.....

RE: Hatteras Mandatory Evacuation At Noon Today.

Listen to Tim , he is a conditioned Local and knows the deal . Get a motel inland for 2 or maybe 3 days and head down as long as this does minimal damage .

RE: Hatteras Mandatory Evacuation At Noon Today.

Man the timing of this is a real pain. That’s a whole bunch of folks who all need hotel rooms on short notice. Plenty of people travel with kids or pets, and I know I couldn’t turn around go home on short notice like that. Twenty hours driving without sleep? That’s not safe.

Dare county should have made this call yesterday evening.

I'm in Hatteras Village and this place is dark. Not many lights tonight. I would estimate about 10% occupancy within my view. Should be plenty of room for social distancing on the beach tomorrow. Bunker down!
