Mail, ups and amazon delivery




Good afternoon everyone

We are moving to Kinnakeet Shores in Avon soon. Is there anyone who lives there who can let us know

1. How is mail received? Are there mailboxes in Kinnakeet shores or do you need to pick up mail at the post office?

2. Do other providers such as UPS deliver directly to the houses?

3. How about Amazon delivery?

You need a PO box in avon.
UPS and Amazon are actually pretty reliable on the island only issue is the delivery date can be extended on some amazon orders ( 1-2 days at most) on some orders but there is no rhyme or reason to when they are delayed.

I’m in Kitty Hawk so I can’t speak directly about Avon but what we have learned (the hard way) is to have all mail addressed to both your street address and your PO Box (like 123 Main St/PO Box 456). This allows packages to get delivered to your home but if there is a hand-off to USPS it is still deliverable.

If you are a full time resident, your PO Box at the Avon Post Office will be assigned to you at no cost. You'll need to go to the PO to sign up. There isn't a separate postal delivery in Kinnakeet Shores.

UPS and FedEx are reliable in Avon, and they usually deliver directly to houses. However, it's advisable to include both your street address and your PO Box in your shipping address. If the delivery drivers can't locate your house, they will sometimes deliver to the PO if the PO Box number is shown.

Amazon is reliable in Avon, although I can't recall ever seeing an Amazon truck on Hatteras Island. We use Amazon frequently, but their deliveries usually arrive via UPS or USPS.

With only two stoplights, Avon is pleasantly quiet and slow, so be patient. smiley Of course, you already know that. You wouldn't be moving to Kinnakeet otherwise. Welcome to the neighborhood. Thumbs up

In Avon your PO box number is your 4 digit extension to your zipcode. Theoretically you should get mail with an address consisting solely of your 9 digit zip code, i.e. 27915-1234. Maybe I'll try that sometime.

Ugh. I forgot my laptop power cord a couple of years ago. Called my wife immediately and she was going to send it to me first thing in the morning. Hurricane forecast for later in the week. Told her to send it with two-day delivery. The added expense for overnight delivery wasn't needed.

Never arrived. Bridge was still open when they could have delivered. Called. They suspended all deliveries to OBX early. Ugh.

99% of our Amazon deliveries to Hatteras Village have come in UPS trucks, never Amazon vehicles. One or two ended up at the Post Office. Maybe it was 2020 but some items took 1-2 days longer, others a week.

One thing I've noticed when ordering items from Amazon to our place in Frisco is that Amazon won't initially recognize the street address. I suspect that is because they use a USPS address verifier, and USPS doesn't recognize the street address because they don't do residential delivery. I'm assuming that triggers Amazon's logistics system to send the item UPS because we've never had a package directed to USPS for last mile delivery.

Also, might add that you incorporate both your physical (UPS/Fed Ex) and POB onto your on line shopping profiles. As many have said, one's original order might indicate that "X" is the shipper (and use physical ship to) only to x fer to "Y" that delivers to the PO (using your PO box).

Also go into the PO and introduce your self - that personal relationship can help when a sender pooches up your address.

One last thing.....everything takes way longer to get to OBX; even more accentuated now.

You are fortunate not to have the USPS in the delivery chain. Seems like 50% of my Amazon orders go from being shipped UPS where it is then transferred to the USPS for final delivery. When one of my recent Amazon orders appeared to vanish the Amazon seller told me the rule of thumb is to allow up to 10 days for final delivery once the package is received by my local PO hub. Sure enough it took 10 days for delivery once the Kitty Hawk PO received the package for final delivery to my home in Colington. I hope it gets better.

That problem doesn't really pertain to Hatteras Island, where there is no USPS home delivery. Luckily, we just have to rely on the USPS workers walking across the room and putting our deliveries into the correct box. That usually takes less than 10 days and is (sometimes) reliable. Wink smiley But, truthfully, my experience with the Avon PO has always been very good.
