Staffing shortages?

Staffing shortages?

Were the international students not allowed again this year? I haven't seen any and most places seem short staffed. Dh went to Duck Donuts this am, 45 min wait. So I just tried to place an online order for tomorrow, no availability for pick up until noon. On Friday, no availability til 9 am. The DD in Kitty Hawk is closed Thursday and Friday. Also the dolphin cruise we like was almost booked for the entire week on Monday. A poor girl at the fudge shoppe in Duck was waiting on customers alone.

For people coming down this summer you may want to consider booking things early. If you really want some special item, bring it with you. We've been coming to OBX for 25 yrs the first full week of June. I've never seen it so crowded. Bring your patience. Duck rd is bumper to bumper traffic all day long. The 4 lane is too for the most part. Most houses must be booked. We dislike crowds. We won't be doing this again if things stay so crowded, which i expect they will. Is fall less popular?

RE: Staffing shortages?

We’re down in Avon and every business seems to be hiring. We decided not to go out to eat much. Most places aren’t open for lunch and have long lines for dinner even at 5:00. Tough time for all.

RE: Staffing shortages?

It really is. I feel bad for those working short staffed. BTDT. It's terrible. We try to be good tippers to help.

RE: Staffing shortages?

We had to wait 30 minutes for a table for breakfast on Saturday and when we finally got seated, we noticed the restaurant was half empty. Kitchen staffing issue. Such a shame.

RE: Staffing shortages?

If you can make more money sitting at home, why work?

RE: Staffing shortages?

Very little foreign labor made it to the US this year, unemployment pay is higher than it has ever been and vacancy is almost nil. So expect long wait times wherever you go. It looks like things are booked solid right into fall this year. Next year? That remains to be seen.

RE: Staffing shortages?

Thanks for posting this. While expected, it's an appreciated reminder of what to expect and the need to adapt.

IKR? Spend all day on your feet and get badgered by impatient people or sit home and crack open a cold one? Big grin

How's the fishing in Frisco? I wish I was there. I am looking forward to Deep Creek and roasting something over an open fire by the water every day.

Also remember those of us that are working (the Ace in Avon for me) are working long hours. We are so short staffed every employee has to work a 7a.m. to 7 p.m. shift at lest once a week. Then Have two 8:30 to 7 shifts, A regular 8 hour shift is like a luxury.
Its like that in most every business, people are exhausted and its only June.

RE: Staffing shortages?

Vacationers might want to consider cooking more at home. Every meal we've had has been sub par. Our favorite BBQ place was not good. In the past it was excellent. We've decided no more eating out. It's been a big waste of money.

Because of the pandemic the State Department has been slow processing the J-1 cultural exchange Visa program. In many countries US Embassy are closed or short staffed. Additionally, there are Covid travel restrictions from many countries such as Britain.

"In North Carolina's Outer Banks, the tourist season is already in full swing, but staff shortages abound, said Karen Brown, head of the beach region's chamber of commerce.

Some restaurants have been forced to shut down once a week or halt curbside service, while in some hotels, managers are helping maids turn over rooms, she said.

"Everyone is pitching in where they can just to keep the wheels on the bus," Brown said."

Is ace going to get anymore of the large Harris lighting external LED light fixtures? I got the last one and need 4 more and no one can say if they are going to get more.

RE: Staffing shortages?

We've only ate at a resturant once. Parking lots are full at breakfast, lunch & dinner. The Food Lion in Avon is pretty busy all day long, not like check-in days but busy

Just can't locate the LED units. They are waterproof and throw out an amazing amount of light and don't require me to go 18 feet up to change a bulb as often.

I'll check into those fixtures tomorrow Thumbs up

More J-1’s were scheduled to be here but couldn’t find housing and we’re sent to other coastal towns.

And don’t be fooled about unemployment. NC pays one of the lowest rates in the nation even with federal help. You can’t live off of it on the beach and would make a lot more by actually working. Every able bodied person i know from 14 years old up has a job on the beach to try and keep up with the demand.

What happened to the usual housing options? Arent there low cost options set aside for seasonal workers?

The housing market went crazy. So many people sold because the market is hot. Everyone bought up the cheaper housing for more second homes or primary homes and they aren’t renting them out. So less places for them to stay.

RE: Staffing shortages?

I dont generally post...but I find great interest in this staffing concern.

Does anyone know what this holds for the future? Unemployment won't last forever for people...and more J1 students will eventually start coming to the US.
But will the obx just be doomed to be short staffed in the years to come no matter what due to the housing problem?

I think this may be the case. Housing has been a problem for decades and it’s not getting better anytime soon. The visitors bureau did a bang up job of pushing this place while the towns kicked the housing problem down the road. This season may be a disappointment for many first time visitors and old timers alike. Everyone I know is absolutely exhausted and over it already and it’s only the beginning of June.

RE: Staffing shortages?

No housing for workers is a bad problem to have. I don't see an easy fix and workers commuting from the mainland is not going to happen with the traffic headaches and the price of gas going up. Somehow, somewhere there needs to be housing on the island or the businesses that rely on service workers will get tired and quit.

RE: Staffing shortages?

Here in the Tri Villages the traffic feels like a Saturday every day now. We called last summer the 4th of July all summer,
I can already see there are more people here this summer, and more people looking to get out as many did not want to last year.

Waterman's is packed all day every day, and I have heard their sales for April/May exceeded last years in summer months.

Some other's have remained take out only as that is the only way to handle the quantity.

2 running jokes that will continue all summer. It now takes 45 minutes to get from Salvo to Rodanthe, and map your route so you never have to turn left.

I know this may fall on deaf ears but please go the 35 mph if not lower.. There are 16 crosswalks in the Tri and the accidents have already started. I understand it may be hard for many that are used to going 70-80 to slow down for one week, but we have to ask...

Finally, use the 24 hours at Food Lion in Avon. May be your best bet to make the trip productive.

The Food Lions in Nags Head have installed user-friendly self-checkout stations—I haven't had to wait in line since, even when the store is crowded

RE: Staffing shortages?

Is it unrealistic to think the towns could build simple dorms that businesses can rent spaces in for their staff? I don't see how an individual business solves this problem on their own.
