So glad to be back, but the house was dirty sadly

I’ve been off the board for awhile. For some reason I couldn’t access the board with my old log in/password so needed to rejoin. I followed a bit last year and then with all the vitriol decided to not be a part of the negativity. Hopefully things are improving!

We’re so glad to be back to the OBX this summer. Just arrived today in Hatteras Village. We’d stayed mostly in Frisco and loved it, but the house we usually rented was booked. The house we are in now is nice- we splurged for OF - since we canceled last summer. I’m looking forward to seeing this area!

Unfortunately, I was so disappointed to see the lack of cleanliness when we arrived. We saw the cleaners ( 2 ) go in bc we arrived at 4 hoping maybe it’d be ready. They left at 5:15. Hair and toenail clippings on the bathroom floor, many carpets obviously not vacuumed, hair and stains on the mattress pad, it was very sad and gross to see. I know there are shortages with help, but this isn’t even a big house. 4 br/ 2 baths. My daughter and I spent a good 45 minutes cleaning. Not something you want to do when you’re tired.

I’m sorry for venting and hope to post a report of the fun things we do this week! It’ll get better- I just know it!!

So sorry you had to clean after driving all day. I know that was very frustrating. I would
Definitely let the rental agency know.
We love Hatteras Village. We usually stay there but couldn’t find a place this year so we are OF in Avon instead. Have a great week hope you enjoy Hatteras as much as we do.

RE: So glad to be back, but the house was dirty sadly

Same here, the house we rented in Avon wasn't very clean either. No workers I guess.

Do you mind posting the rental company?

Did they call the PM?

Also curious......

RE: So glad to be back, but the house was dirty sadly

We did call the rental company this morning. Outer Beaches. They were very apologetic and offered to have someone come out to reclean but since my daughter and I did a thorough job Saturday night and yesterday we did not feel it was necessary. We also have our stuff set out, so…The gentleman I spoke to said he would report the disappointing condition we came into. The supervisor- who was supposed to check after the cleaning crew came- never showed up. I truly feel had they done so, they would have called back for a redo in the bathrooms at the least. We’re not going to let this affect our week too negatively, but did want them to know. I haven’t experienced this before, so I’m sure the low staffing and high number of houses is to blame, but it still was very much a bummer at first.

On a good note we found a wonderful ice cream shop- the Happy Belly! Loved it! Also, Robinsons Store had some nice sweatshirts and we made more dents in our wallets at the Seaworthy Gallery! Such pretty things! Got fresh shrimp for dinner last night from Risky Business seafood. We’re going to either Buxton Seafood market or Harbor House seafood market later this week. Any opinions on either? We love the vibe down here this far! Such a beautiful place this is!!

RE: So glad to be back, but the house was dirty sadly

You just mentioned all of my favorite spots. Lee Robinson store is awesome not sure if they opened up the upstairs gift shop this year but that is a not to be missed spot. Seaworthy is a great store too. We love Harbour house. Vicky is super sweet and willing to help you out with whatever you need. Don’t miss Hatteras landing shops and blue pelican gallery gifts. Dancing turtle makes amazing coffee and Lattes. Hope this helps.

RE: So glad to be back, but the house was dirty sadly

I’m a sucker for Harbor House. Raw fish to cook yourself or some pre made things, ahhh the seafood enchiladas, heat and eat. Great dips and spreads, too., yellowfin, or crab, yum. . Check their website, and Miss Vicki is one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet.
Check the Blue Pelican for gifts. And Scotch Bonnet for fudge and taffy.
The required Apple ugly at Orange Blossom bakery, and for other wonderful baked goods and treats, Scratchmade Snackery.

RE: So glad to be back, but the house was dirty sadly

We stayed in Duck the last week of June, Stayed in a 4 bed 3 bath older place. Well cleaned and well maintained. You could tell the owner stays frequently and takes pride in the place. Sorry to hear you didn't have the same experience. I would imagine an investment property would suffer a bit more compared to a retirement investment type of place.

RE: So glad to be back, but the house was dirty sadly

Thanks for all the suggestions!! To the Harbor House we will go! Lol! Then maybe for fudge. I’m going to gain 10 lbs this week!

Regarding the house situation, I do feel so bad for the owners of these places if they aren’t cleaned well after each guest. If they knew/saw what we did upon arriving I’m sure their hearts would have sunk. We made up for it though! Lol It’s smelling/looking good for the week. We just put into gear our inner Monica Bing (Friends reference here) and got it done! Thanks everyone for your help!

RE: So glad to be back, but the house was dirty sadly

On another bright side... the prior renters didn't burn the place down before you got there!

RE: So glad to be back, but the house was dirty sadly

Risky Business has the best shrimp in my opinion

RE: So glad to be back, but the house was dirty sadly

Just got back from Hatteras on Saturday. Went to Buxton Seafood, Risky Business and Harbor House. We usually bounce between Risky and Buxton. Buxton seemed to have the best prices, Risky had the selection we wanted and Harbor had some good looking shrimp but was going to be out of fish until this past weekend. Hope they were able to restock.

Maybe my wife and are the only one's who do it but we do a light cleaning the night before we leave. Its doesn't take long, run the vacuum cleaner, wipe down dirty surfaces etc.... Maybe spend 30 minutes total. Then again we are not pigs, we don't cart in loads of sand and make a mess of the house. We have been on the short end of good cleanings in the past. We figure what we do might help the next renters. I'm willing to bet a few cleaners have been to our rentals and thought a cleaning crew must have come in already Lol

We do the same. We clean night before and then the morning we leave we run the vacuum again. I’ve cleaned places that have not been cleaned in weeks or even months. I’m happy to do my part for the next renters.
Last year cleaners didn’t come until about 9pm so I cleaned after them mostly just surfaces. I knew those cleaners had to be exhausted and probably couldn’t get to everything.

RE: So glad to be back, but the house was dirty sadly

Add us into the leave it cleaner than you found it club. (Although in this year’s case it’ll be waaay cleaner than how we found it!) We always do a light cleaning- just seems like it may be a help to those who are working so hard to clean and to those coming in.

We had great take out Pizza tonight from The Gingerbread House. I liked it better than Rocco’s. Also got our Scotch Bonnet Fudge. Omg so good. They’ll be getting an order from us at Christmas. They box up and ship anywhere. That may become a new family tradition! We drove out to South Beach after dinner. No one there. Literally no one. It was so pretty. Started to rain a bit so we sound a few shells and had to leave to keep from getting soaked. Memories lol. We were kind of surprised to not see many campers at the campground. Maybe bc it’s Not the weekend, but the last time we drove through (2019) it was packed.

We’re heading to get coffee at the Dancing Turtle and head to Ocracoke tomorrow we think. Hope the rain holds off. The week is going by too fast.

RE: So glad to be back, but the house was dirty sadly

We love Hatteras Village, and Frisco. Nice and quiet. My only complaint is the lack of restaurant options. You have Dinkys, the Breakwater, and Hatteras Sol. Maybe Quarterdeck I guess. But when we were down in late June Dinkys kept closing due to lack of staff. Good luck getting into Breakwater or Hatteras Sol. The wait was 2 hours.
If you don’t want to eat out in a local restaurant then it’s all good.

RE: So glad to be back, but the house was dirty sadly

Alohr, I could see that would be an issue for families that eat out a lot while on vacation. It is all good for us though. We cook meals/eat in mostly- maybe a couple dinners out. My daughter loves to cook so I’m lucky. This year we cooked seafood in and tonight are ordering takeout. The lines to eat in a restaurant are too much- esp this year.

We went to Ocracoke yesterday. Speaking of good food… I’m now a huge fan of Eduardo’s. I got the blackened fish tacos with mango salsa. To die for!! Kids got a crab taco and burrito of some type. Delicious! We saw all our favorite places. Books to be Red, Springers Point, Ocracoke Coffee. It is obvious there is still is recovery occurring from Dorian. I can’t even imagine what that island went through. The trees at Springers Point, where we sat under shade three years ago, all were bent back and uprooted. There were a ton of tourists there, though, so hopefully revenue will ramp up again for all those who make a living there.

Beautiful day - a full day of sun- today! Got out morning coffee and a new mug from the Dancing Turtle. Great coffee shop. I’d be there as a regular if I lived here full time. Ocean temperature was perfect. Perfect waves for boogie boarding! I even took a few in- I’m almost 60 but still it is one of my favorite things to do! One more full day. Im getting sad about leaving. I think I’ve enjoyed this year more than any other. With all that has happened with the pandemic, I’m SO grateful to be able to enjoy our time together as a family.

Try The Tavern on 12, next to the Frisco Woods Campground. It's very good!

RE: So glad to be back, but the house was dirty sadly

In addition to Sol, Dinky’s Breakwater, you mention, and others’ posted suggestions:
Sandbar and Grille
Sonny’s (I’m partial to their breakfasts)
Rusty’s Surf and Turf
The inn on Pamlico sound
* the above, too, may well be experiencing staffing snafus

Also, haven’t been, but have friends who have to a new restaurant The Cockeyed Clam and very positive reports.

RE: So glad to be back, but the house was dirty sadly

As an owner of a rental home when I hear things like this it really upsets me. To all renters - if you arrive at a house and it is dirty or something is missing or broken, please alert the rental company immediately. Your call with a complaint will show up as a service order to an owner on their owner portal. For me, it's the only way I know anything about my house. If my renters arrive to a dirty house/things broken/missing, I want to know, it means my cleaners and my management company are not doing what I pay them (a lot) to do. No service orders = a fantastic rental season for owners and renters. I wish I could rent to all you folks on this board because you all seem to really care about the homes you rent, this season, many renters do not. I know there are also some owners do not keep their homes up, but many of us work our butts off during every visit to our houses to make sure you are getting an excellent rental when you arrive.

We are renting from Outer Beaches for the first time in a few weeks. I am a little nervous that the guaranteed check-in time is only 7 p.m., so I'm glad to hear some people are getting in earlier.

We are trying to figure out if we should alter our normal travel plan from NJ. We should leave around 4:30 a.m., cross the Wright Bros. bridge around 1, stop somewhere for lunch and then get into our KDH rental around 4. Between reports of increased traffic this year, the extra drive down to H.I., and the later check-in times, I'm not sure when to leave.

7PM???!

That is just ridiculous. Stop passing your staffing shortgaes on to the guy who foots the bill.

It was certainly a bit shocking to learn that. I'm sympathetic to the challenges of the last two summers, but I feel like we are paying for 7 days but only getting 6. I think we'll still plan to be there mid-afternoon and we can always go to Coquina Beach if the house isn't ready.
