Mid Currituck Bridge

Mid Currituck Bridge

Does anyone have a status update on this and know the next steps. Last I heard, the PM presented to Souther Shores Mayor and said they are targeting final funding in 2022 and start construction in 2023. Are there activities happening or is it just on hold until next year. I know there are lawsuits that haven’t been settled, are these stopping all activities?

RE: Mid Currituck Bridge

It's PR. Keeping enough people interested in it so that maybe people will become interested enough in it.

There's no funding.

RE: Mid Currituck Bridge

Found this and we have heard about this bridge for well over 20 years, so let see what the next 5 years brings.

Yawn...

RE: Mid Currituck Bridge

So it sounds like everything is on hold until the lawsuit against NC DOT is resolved and there is not date for the hearing. Wow! How did the Jug Handle bridge get approved but this cant. That is 2.5 miles over the sound.

Greater need (one is a convenience one is a lifeline) . And "more" bargaining chips ;)

RE: Mid Currituck Bridge

You are younger than me so you might live to see it start.

The jug handle approval took 15+ years. Those lawyers left that project and went to the bridge we might never see.

Sorta kinda - as many will remember it festered, then accelerated with some back room conversation/horse trading between SELC/NCDot/ et al on the Bonner/Basnight "re build". In fact, until about 2 (I think it was) years ago there wasn't going to be a jug handle; instead the project would actually elevate the existing Rt12 across S Curves.

It's all so "Chickamacomico " smiley

And as many of y'all know - S Curves is NOT the only vulnerable spot between the bridge and Mirlo. But, it's certainly an improvement!

RE: Mid Currituck Bridge

Jughandle was also a bargain price-wise by comparison (about 1/4 of the MCB's estimated cost as of 2016 pricing) and not a new expenditure, but largely a shifted one, because NCDOT was spending an increasing fortune constantly clearing that portion of road. Not the view those soundfront homes bargained for though.

RE: Mid Currituck Bridge

Too bad Dare county can’t stop Currituck county from building up every square inch of land and then using their roads to get out. It’s truly ridiculous how close together and how many houses are going up in Corolla. It’s McMansions as close as townhomes. They won’t be happy till every square inch has a house on it. 12 is backed up till 1-2m every Saturday for people leaving. They need to stop building!

RE: Mid Currituck Bridge

It'll be built sooner or later. I'd like to see it built. The Genie is already out of the bottle for OBX.

How many of those opposed to the bridge would have been against increasing Routes 158 & 168 to five lanes?
I remember crawling on 2 lanes of 158 & 168 from Great Bridge to the single span of WMB.
Should the second span of WMB never have been built? Car

Good luck with that. There is no love between the two counties and only cooperate when they must. For Currituck the beach is the gift that keeps on giving. They are just following Dare's model to build out everything to increase tax revenue. Until the bridge is built, there is plenty that Dare could do to help ease the traffic, but do not appear to have the will to do it.

RE: Mid Currituck Bridge

Unfortunately I think it already too late to stop the building of houses. So….is the next step just waiting for the lawsuits to have their day in court? Is anyone actively working on funding, permits, etc, or all on hold for now. The only thing I heard was watch for update in June 2022 possible start in 2023. Is this work done by NC Dot? Maybe they would have more answers?

RE: Mid Currituck Bridge

Simple answer, not in my Lifetime.

NCDOT has this to post:

RE: Mid Currituck Bridge

This "bridge building stuff" is everywhere...look at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and the "need" to build a "lower" bridge across the bay.

I bet none of your guys that have been stuck in CBB Sunday traffic heading west, see the delays in getting off OBX as being an issue.

RE: Mid Currituck Bridge

Have to travel in the summer time - now expanded by more "shoulder" season rentals - at 0 Dark Thirty. The people that I feel for are the house cleaners who leave Elizabeth City or other inland points very early and then sleep in their cars until the renters vacate. Not holding my breath about this bridge being built - NC DOT has needs that affect people's everyday commutes more than this bridge, which no matter how you slice it , remains a "seasonal" issue, even with the definition of "seasonal" expanding.

RE: Mid Currituck Bridge

Build it and they will come!

Never mind they are already there.

I haven't been stuck on the CBB. Honestly I don't travel it that often. I have been stuck on the Harry W Nice Memorial Bridge which carries Rt 301 traffic between VA to MD. For the uninitiated this is a two lane bridge, 11' lanes each way with no divider, just a double yellow line. I've been stopped on the bridge and the bridge movement feels like you're on a pogo stick. Also it's a thrill to have 18 wheelers coming at you on the down slope when they are running flat out.

Stand by for the replacement bridge, it’s in the works.
