J4yDubs May 2022 Emerald Isle Trip Report

***Note this trip was taken last week. I didn't really have time to do it everyday, so I waited until I got home***

Saturday

Late last year we decided to go to Emerald Isle instead of the Outer Banks this year. We're looking at land in the Swansboro area and wanted to get a feel for it. I'll always love the Outer Banks, but the market is way more than what I want to pay. We will still visit though.

We drove down Saturday. Myself, my wife, son and dog in my truck and my Daughter and her boyfriend in his car. He didn't listen to me and missed an exit and ended up going down 95S instead of my normal route 1/13/113, etc. The trip was nice and calm for the most part. We got in the house about 30 minutes before them even though they left before us.

We rented a nice ocean front house in the "skinny" area of Emerald Isle. It was 4 houses from the sound to the beach. Nice house that can use a few updates, but the layout worked perfectly and it was very clean and comfortable. It had great views. We unpacked, cooked dinner and then just hung out. I hit the deck with a beer and was in my happy place again.

I'm still sorting through the pictures, so it'll probably take me a few day to post everything. Here's a few from Saturday.

- Our view from the top deck. Of course I have to include my alien feet with the almost full moon.

- Coby. He doesn't do great in a car yet, but was actually pretty good. He's not so sure about the new digs yet though.

RE: J4yDubs May 2022 Emerald Isle Trip Report

- Miss Kelly. She was out there pretty much every day.

- Two days before the full moon.

Nice!!

So our group just likes to hang out and rarely venture out to eat. We enjoy the sunrises and sunsets and the general vibe on Hatteras Island. Even the trip down has its own highlightsChesapeake Wawa, Grave Digger, Morris market etc. Do you think we can get the same results further south? Have family in Florida now and they would not mind a shorter trip.

Emerald Isle (and neighboring beaches) are more like Nags Head/KH/KDH than Hatteras Island. We got there on May 14th and the crowds were already growing. I'm sure it's packed in the Summer. It wasn't crowded where were (about 50' from each family), but the public parking places were packed.

The sunrise and sunset are over the island (south facing beach), so you have to drive somewhere to see the sunrise/sunset. We were going to look for a spot for a sunset, but never did.

We came down the same way we would if we were going to Hatteras Island except we took 17S instead of 168S. 17S doesn't really have anything on it except for a big windmill cluster. It's a nice easy drive, but not much to stop at unless you venture a few miles off it.

Sunday

Sunday was a beach day. I woke up early, for me at least, and noticed something jumping in the ocean a ways out. Got the camera out and zoomed in. It was sharks! They were jumping completely out of the water and spinning. I'm assuming they were feeding. This went on for 30 minutes at least. Fun to watch.

After that display we ate breakfast and headed to the beach. Perfect weather and the water was around 75. Very nice quiet day.

I did hamburgers and hot dogs on the grill for lunch and we ordered takeout at Rucker Johns. Rucker Johns was really good.

Those would be, Spinner Sharks! We had a whole day of their antics at Buxton a few years ago. Amazing!

Coby and I in the water. He loved the water, but wasn't sure about the waves at first. In just a couple minutes he was swimming around.

This is down by Indian Beach. A few miles away. These wind shades were everywhere. I'm not a fan because of the flapping noise. I'll stick to a boring old umbrella.

I figured that was what they were. Some of them were huge. I took way too many pictures of them. Laughing smiley

How much longer a drive is it to EI than the OB?
We come down the eastern shore also.
And are rentals any cheaper?

It takes us about 9 hours to get to Emerald Isle from Central Bucks County, PA. It's pretty close to the trip to Hatteras Village. Maybe 30-60 minutes longer.

I didn't compare the prices, but I'm pretty sure it's cheaper. The house (link below) was $3,200 for the week (mid-May). Oceanfront, 6 bedrooms, 5 1/2 baths. This is the earliest we've gone though, so I don't know how it compares during the same timeframe.

Thanks, Dubs
We come from very south Jersey. On a good day it’s 6 hrs to Nags Head. I think we will make a trip to EI real soon.
Great looking house!

Monday

The winds have really kicked up. We did the beach in the morning and went out for lunch. Stopped at Lowes Foods for a little food shopping. This is the first time we've been in a Lowes Foods. I was very impressed. Good selection, nice layout.

We had Bojangles for lunch! My favorite! Laughing smiley Got a couple 1/2 gallon ice teas for the house. The rest of the day we kinda just hung out. Walks on the beach, sitting on the deck, etc. My daughter and her boyfriend went out shopping and I told them to get some shrimp and scallops for dinner. We did a low country boil and it was really good.
