Finger mullet in the sound on the island

Are finger mullet plentiful in the sound now? I'll be there in 2 weeks for my first summer trip in eons and am looking to net some mullet in the sound around Frisco. Usually I fish in October and the mullet are thick.

I think you'll be able to find some in in the sound near Frisco. I don't think they'll be as plentiful as later in the fall, but there will be some.
A good indicator will be if the local cast netters have found them and they are for sale in the coolers at the tackle shops.

Thanks. I believe I've been seeing fresh finger mullet on the local tackle shops' Facebook pages. I'll have my net on the yak... now I just need to get up the cajones to try and throw the net from the yak. I've mastered exit/entry in thigh deep water so my current plan of attack is to exit the yak in order to throw... trying to avoid a yard sale, etc. Laughing smiley

We're in Frisco soundfront and caught a few on the sound as well as on the canal. Gonna try and fish some this afternoon with the mullets.

My game plan is to run them under a popping cork. Last October and this spring I had had good luck on popping cork using the typical stuff (jig heads, Z man, etc.) and this time around I'm going to rig two rods with corks. One conventional and one for live mullet. I've seen a lot of videos of folks using live mullet under the corks and killing the trout and drum so I'm eager to try. Plus I think a larger sized finger mullet *may* have a better chance of deterring pin fish and lizard fish.

Good luck and send pics! Sounds like a good plan!

I have not seen any big schools of finger mullet but I did stir up a few large mullet on the backside below.the Coast Guard Station. What I have seen oceanside and at the inlet are large schools of glass minnows. Small trout and blues getting caught at the inlet. Most folks are casting with soft bodies artificial at inlet. Two weeks ago, before the wind started blowing so hard, we were catching a few trout near the floating oyster beds straight out from Frisco Woods Campground in 5-6ft of water. Look for grassy bottom, fish the edges. Good luck,

Thanks! We're staying at Frisco Woods and I've been glued to Google Maps these past few weeks scoping out the grass beds and ledges behind it. We'll be hitting a few of our old spots around the island as well. I'm hoping the wind cooperates.

EDIT: I also picked up some bait binder to hopefully attract some pinfish. If the mullet aren't plentiful hopefully we can net some pinfish to live line.

Anything to report yet? My neighbor caught 25 trout on Saturday afternoon, kept four - one 20" fatty - all at his secret spot within sight of Frisco Woods Campground. I went Friday morning and fished hard for three hours and caught one. Fish

We arrive Saturday. Right now I'm just trying to keep gear acquisition at bay.

RE: Finger mullet in the sound on the island

I have had two separate reports of nice size drum caught in the evenings behind the Coast Guard station. Using cut bait. No finger mullet yet, only glass minnows. The weather looks good for wading and casting or kayaking.

We went out behind Frisco Woods for 90 mins or late this afternoon. Wind was ripping and loose grass was clogging hooks. Caught a decent blue and dad caught a pinfish. Several short strikes probably from pinfish. Saw some glass minnows and that was about it. We only went out as far as the second set of PVC poles whatever those are. Looks like an impound net setup, sort of, but not exactly.

We are in that area in Brigand's Bay on the sound near Frisco Woods. (Love love love Frisco Woods...so nice)Hubby has been talking to neighbors about better places to fish in that area and they have some really nice spots. We're coming back down the 23rd for a couple of weeks. I am thinking thr PVC poles are ones that were set up to navigate through the channel. We drive through those in two separate areas right there where the water isn't as shallow. Hubby kicks the boat into high gear after we have gone through the PVC poles always looking at the depth finder instrument. Hoping we can catch something then!!! Good luck to you and have a great time!!

These poles are different. They are in a cluster with ropes tied to them, but I’m not sure what they are. You can fish them without snagging and pedal through them if you aim it right. The poles you refer to are closer to Brigands I think. I was almost there and saw single poles here and there.

We found a huge school of puppy drum today. I caught a 21” and 29” and had one pop off and another break off. Dad caught a 26” one and a 17” trout. They will meet the grease. We went over to 49 this afternoon and got a small pompano and small whiting. Water was warm and crystal clear. Nothing on metal, but we saw bonito or false albacore tearing up the glass minnows. Ramp 49 is a zoo. Feels like the northern beaches. It’s been many years since I’ve been here in summer so perhaps this is just they way it is down here now. Not as desolate as I remember. I’m sure the point closure doesn’t help.

RE: Finger mullet in the sound on the island

Okay! Wasn't sure about the PVC poles! Sounds like some good fishing!!!! Congrats!!!! Yep...49 is an interstate right now, but we are hoping once schools go back, it will drop off!!! It is a fabulous beach for kids since it is flat and the waves are southern facing. There are some good deep holes in the surf along there that hubby always looks for to fish. I do think come sept and oct, ramp 49 will settle down. Again...congrats on your catches!!! Yay!

RE: Finger mullet in the sound on the island

Great report! Ramp 49 is a zoo and Ramp 55 is difficult to traverse with the skinny beaches and turtle closures. Glad you found some fish on the back side. Now that my weekend company is gone home I hope find time to catch and release some over slot drum on light tackle. I wish you and your Dad continued success. Fish

RE: Finger mullet in the sound on the island

Caught 8 trout today, all keepers. Kept the largest 2, one was citation (5.5 lb), other was 4.83 lb. All on popping cork except for 1 small one on grub. Canadian Hole.

RE: Finger mullet in the sound on the island

Wow!!! Congrats on the citation!!!

It may be too late to take this advice but to practice tossing a cast net from your kayak do it sitting down in your back yard. Once you learn from the grass the kayak will feel very similar. I use a small 4' net so it's not too hard to cast, handle or get back in the kayak.

I thought about a 3’ net for that purpose, but haven’t tried it yet. I have a 6’ which requires me to have a firm footing and some room.

RE: Finger mullet in the sound on the island

You are making it look too easy!

RE: Finger mullet in the sound on the island

Fished Salvo Day Use today. It was a bit slow, but dad got a 24” trout. Lots of blues and other small stuff around tearing the tails off of grubs. Rode down to ramp 55 and there wasn’t much available there to drive. Took the Pole Rd to the inlet and drove the beach a little there at the ramps just below 55, but didn’t fish. We’re tied at two apiece on days won fishing so I need to drop the hammer starting tomorrow.

RE: Finger mullet in the sound on the island

You and your Dad are great fishermen!
