Pioneer Theatre Manteo - Closing

Saw this on FB Click to follow link...

After much discussion, thought and consideration, it is with a great deal of sadness, we, as the Creef family, have had to make the extremely difficult decision of not reopening The Pioneer Theater.
This decision has not been made lightly, and has been something that has been coming for a long period of time, as we have watched decreasing attendance, increasing expenses, and changes in the theater industry over the years, all of which have contributed to ever increasing yearly financial losses.
We feel greatly honored and proud to have been an integral part of such a wonderful community over the last 104 years, serving and providing entertainment and “babysitting” services to many generations.
We would like to thank all of you who have supported us so much over all of these years, especially those who have been our core faithful and loyal customers week after week, year after year. We have enjoyed watching so many of you grow up, and then bring the next generation and introduce them to our popcorn world.
We consider all of you a part of our family and Love you very much. Hopefully, all of you, as part of our popcorn family, understand how hard this decision was for us and respect how much this saddens us.
With Love and Sadness,
Tim, Lizann, and Buddy Creef

Another icon gone.
Too sad

RE: Pioneer Theatre Manteo - Closing

Someday our grandchildren will be saying, “Does anyone remember the Pioneer Theater in Manteo?”

RE: Pioneer Theatre Manteo - Closing

Been here or coming here for 36 years and have never been there. I am sad to see anyplace close - I hate change. I wondered how long they could hold out.

RE: Pioneer Theatre Manteo - Closing

I ,am beyond words. My very first "date" was diamonds are forever at the Pioneer. Later in my young adulthood someone told me Deliverance "had wonderful scenery" so I treated my mother to the movie. To this day, I can't remember a more awkward drive home.

RE: Pioneer Theatre Manteo - Closing

I worked Summers here in 1981, 82, 83. Lived in Skyco. I saw a movie or two at the Pioneer back then.

Of course back then the movies were real film! The flying company I worked for had a contract for awhile to fly the reels of film from (I think) Greensboro into Dare Co airport to deliver to the Pioneer. After playing for a week or 2 we would fly the reels back to Greensboro and bring the next movie to Manteo!

I first went to the theatre in 1973, I was 10 and thought it was cool then. My wife and I spent our Honeymoon in Nags Head in 1991, she had never been to the Outer Banks and I said we have to see a movie there. I think we have been down 30 times since that and have always gone there to support them.

That's a shame. Theaters are closing everywhere. There just aren't any good movies anymore.

Coffee, literally, right out the nose smiley

It is sad to see the place (heck, any place that has created so many memories over the years) go. I thought they were gonna make it, having recently (I read somewhere) raised enough money for a new projector upgrade. I know a little about the financial side of theater operation. From the cost of digital migration to further (and seemingly never ending) projection and sound system upgrades (required if one still wants to have access to mainstream distribution) it's brutal. The vast majority of that tix price doesn't go to the operator, hence $10 popcorn/$5 candy...if at a theater I frequent I have no prob ponying up for over priced candy and drinks - I also religiously make sure all of our trash (and that easy to reach around us) gets properly disposed (vs dropped and left on the floor).

Sad to hear. I’d always hoped to get up there someday. I used to love going to the theater, but haven’t been to one in years because TVs are have gotten bigger and more affordable, and I can watch any movie I want at home, thanks to streaming services. Still always sad to lose an icon, though. Love reading all of your memories of the place!

There's still movies coming out that I'd like to watch in a theater, but I can't because of the inconsiderate people (talking, phones, etc). I have to say something to them and it just ruins the experience for me. Haven't been to a theater in over 20 years, so it's not a new problem. Not to mention my bladder can't hold out for the over 2 hour movies now a days after drinking that large soda. Laughing smiley

I recreated it in my basement the best could, including large screen, surround, and hot oil popcorn machine, so I'm not missing much. But I do miss it sometimes.

Sorry to see them go out of business. As BF said, it's happening all over.

Never went to the Pioneer but sad to see it go. Nowadays the busiest theaters have a bar to get beer, wine or a canned cocktail to take into the show and comfy recliners to sit in. We enjoy a night out at the movies because the special effects are better on the big screen.

I won't disagree with your no good movies comment, but I suspect a lot of it has to do with big screen TVs being cheap, streaming quality being so good, and you can rent movies from the comfort of your home. Some say the experience is not the same, but for me I'd rather be in my house watching than having to get up for a bio break and then missing out on what happened. The last movie I saw in theatre was the The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. I've been 100% streaming since.

This is why I like going to the theaters in KDH. When we go to a weekday matinee sometimes we have the theater to ourselves and most times there is just a handful of people in the theater.

My wife and I still like to go out to the movies, still like the Big Screen. Check out the Ambler Theater, its not far from you. The place is great, the main theater is fantastic Click to follow link...

Seems to me that the only theaters that have a model that works are the high end ones with reserved recliner seating, higher end food, and alcohol with waitstaff service.

The Ambler Theater which is only minutes from me has operated great the last 20 years since its renovation. Then again they are nonprofit. The theater is gorgeous.

Sad news.

I suggest everyone watch, "The Last Picture Show."

RE: Pioneer Theatre Manteo - Closing

I've been there many times over the last few decades. One of the first things we used to do when we got to the house was to call to listen to the message to find out what was playing.

Thanks for some good memories.

A great movie!
AG should have won an Oscar for his performance!
Boy would I love to go!

RE: Pioneer Theatre Manteo - Closing

As a local Resident, I was thrilled to see the sale and renovation of the Theater. Spent a lot of time in there with Grandchildren over the years. However, I really think that the new owners will have to be very careful on what they schedule. I noticed that they want to schedule classic movies. Will that draw audiences? You can watch these movies on TV. You will not get the multitude of Pre-teens and teens that flooded the place on Friday and Saturday nights. I just saw they booked "The Chairman of the Board", a 60's/70's Beach Music/Soul Group, but Tickets are $60. The original Lead Singer, General Johnson died many years ago. $60, I really don't know? Wish them luck

The renovation looks great. Hope enough folks can support it.
