Island-wide communication outage

I just got this on my text - cell phone. I am not in Avon, but unable to access my Ecobee's in my house. Does anyone know if this means Spectrum is out? I suspect so but appreciate any input.

Thanks,
Rodney

OCRACOKE, N.C. (WITN) - Phone and internet service on Hatteras and Ocracoke islands are not working.

Hyde County Public Information says a fiber optic line has been damaged near the Pea Island Visitor Center again, impacting communications on the two islands.

The county says repair crews have been sent by Brightspeed, but there’s no estimated time on how long the service will be out.

A Hyde County spokesman said when the line is cut everything except satellite internet goes down.

Last May, the same thing happened and service was restored the next day.

OBXAlerts Update: Brightspeed indicates fiber service to Hatteras Island should be restored by 430pm. Until then if unable to call 911 try text to 911 or seek help at Fire or EMS stations.

It’s back up

Everything was out.. Again. This is the 3rd time and getting old. Had to drive to Nags Head to work.

Another Fiber Optic cable cut. You would think by now they know what one looks like.

They know what they look like. They say, "Yes, that is a fiber line you just cut". They know what they look like when cut smiley with shades

Getting really old....Starlink is beginning to make a little more sense.

RE: Island-wide communication outage

Agreed on Starlink, but look at their map. Available now - South of Waves and North of Avon. Um, places no one really resides. Move those down to point over Avon, please.

Avon area - sometime 2023.

RE: Island-wide communication outage

Hard to believe in this day and age that a redundant link following a completely different route hasn't been established. This is pretty common practice particularly for government facilities. As someone in the field, I understand that there are costs, some rather large, for installing this redundancy but it can be offset by the revenue that can be created by providing additional or new services.

The problem is that where they were digging there's not a lot of real estate for a different route unless you run the line on a pole in the salt marsh. That would take an act of Congress to achieve.

RE: Island-wide communication outage

We have been very happy with Starlink.

RE: Island-wide communication outage

It’s annoying, but, we’re almost used to it by now. There is an ongoing effort to get a fiber link from Ocracoke to Cedar Island. IF it happens, it won’t be soon.

RE: Island-wide communication outage

What ever happened to "Call before you dig"? Or doesn't that work anymore.

RE: Island-wide communication outage

As far as Star link goes, I have it in Buxton and have been super happy with it, plenty of speed and no down time.
I have dish network also, only trade off with that is when it rains, haven't had any problems with Star link due to weather

$39 a month with Silicon Travel vs. $120 a month with Starlink...I think I'll continue to take the change of cut lines. Not listening

Totally agree...but the down times of CL of late have been crazy (not just talking the fiber cut of last week). If one relies on the interwebz to work it can get problematic. Also, some folks need (I guess) the vastly faster StarLink speed. I have been told that Spectrum now provides significantly better uptimes as they now have their own feed to HI (vs, riding on the CL leg as they had been).

Well we are in rural South Jersey and don’t have access to Silicon Travel or any cable. Comcast wants to charge us $9000 (that’s 9 thousand!) to run a line from the south end of our property (where they have a line )to our house (about 300 ft).We are thrilled to have Starlink. We very rarely have any problems and when there is it usually corrects within a minute or two.
Plus we can travel with it if we’d like.

Perfect use case for StarLink - BTW, that's not an unreasonable price for a new service drop in a rural (no other folks to benefit and spread the cost around).

Oh, quick clarifier - Silicon Travel is not an ISP, they VAR both Spectrum and CL

Heads up on the Starlink "mobile" (I think they call it "Roam") aspect - I'm hearing that there may be additional charges for mobile use, if they haven't already. Still, the ability to deliver that kind of bandwidth in the middle of no where continually impresses.

RE: Island-wide communication outage

We’ve never traveled with it and probably won’t so I can’t comment. Just very thankful for it. Internet used to be a nightmare.
Thanks, Elon!

RE: Island-wide communication outage

Love Fresh Market!!

RE: Island-wide communication outage

All communication shut down. Starlink will not fix that part.

Huh? StarLink’s only prerequisite is 120v and view of the sky. SIP phone/wifi calling works awesome ??

We'd been using Spectrum internet in Rodanthe for over a year with (almost) no issues other than the fiber cuts. The "almost" is Spectrum reboots their system (I think) weekly about 3am. More of an annoyance as our alarm system lets me know. Otherwise no issues, no buffering, no drops.

They now offer speeds up to a Gig in Rodanthe (I'll assume most of HI). We just upgraded to use Spectrum TV (using their app and not hardwired boxes). They gave us a heck of a deal (IMHO)- 190 (or so) channels and gig internet for $125 locked for 2 years. A plus is we can pause TV billing when we shut the place down for the winter. We had been using YouTube TV but they raised their rates to $73 a month.
