OK....Here's one that predates my recollections... Ann (Jennette) Hodges once described to me a "bar" or beer joint in Buxton located somewhere on the ridge where the mini golf , ice cream parlor, or maybe Falcon Motel or whatever it's current name is, sits..... She said the locals of it's time called it "The Bucket of Blood"... obviously it was well before my time, or i probably would have had a story to tell.... Can ANYONE provide any details on that 'legend' ? Maybe I''ll ask Carol Dillon...
FOLLOW UP: DISCUSSED THIS WITH MS. CAROL DILLON, 90+ YO LIFELONG BUXTON RESIDENT.
There WAS such a place. She was quite specific and knowledgeable. It was located on the oceanfront in the vicinity of the motels at the north end of Buxton.. She stated that her father built (and apparently owned) it. He hired other local resident(s) to operate the place, and it was at the time the only oceanfront structure in the area. She described it as a "dance hall where they sold beer"... and said the patrons included people from Buxton, Avon and the surrounding area, including Locals , Visitors, Coast Guard, and govt employees who were working at the "New Deal" CCC Camp. {That would have put the time frame in the EARLY 1930's, definately pre WWII...) It was commonly called and known only as "The Bucket of Blood" and she mentioned no other name...
Had to be the place to be seen in Buxton Saturday evenings. (Wonder what "Band" played the place ?)
