Rental availability

Rental availability

I was making arrangements for an RV spot for this October and the staff told me they have had well over twenty reservations cancelled from some of their Canadian regulars that won't be vacationing in the states this year. I wonder if that is also taking place for house rentals as well.
If you have a favorite rental home, but it was already booked, you may want to check back for any cancellations.

P.S:
If you want to jump on here and turn this post into a political bickering match, I'll self-delete the post immediately. It's intended to be a public service announcement for those that may be interested.

Found this in the Cape May - Lewes Ferry parking lot last year. It's only worth about 70 US cents, that could be why. This coin stuck to my magnetic key chain in my pocket, so now it's stuck to a magnet on the fridge.

Yup, I just ordered some stuff from a Candian reseller - significant opp on the currency exchange.

Here's the one year view

RE: Rental availability

I would say it had no effect but we have 2 couples from canada that rent our house every fall for the kiteboarding at Canadian hole and they rent through VRBO. The first 1/2 is paid when they make the reservation and the 2nd is automatically processed 30 days before check in and I got an email that the 2nd payment had processed 2 weeks ago which is long before it was due

. Not sure if the exchange rate had anything to do with it.

"had well over twenty reservations cancelled from some of their Canadian regulars that won't be vacationing in the states this year."

I wonder how many American regulars have cancelled because everything else costs so much this year..

It may be a good time to plan a Canada trip soon with the expected favorable exchange rate.

I’m holding off making my usual rental reservation in October until I see if tariffs will affect the costs of going on vacation. I hope I can afford it because I’ve been coming to the OBX for decades. I love it!!!!!

How would any tariffs affect the cost of a vacation rental in The Outer Banks. They're not importing any rental houses from China, are they? I can't think of anything that would be affected. Go there, buy fresh local fish, and enjoy yourself. (Oh, the cost of Tuna may be coming down due to lack of export, so there is that.)

RE: Rental availability

My take on that comment is that they will have to see how high every day prices might go, which would use up their vacation nest egg money and they could not afford to go on any vacation.

My house on Hatteras is a little ahead of bookings compared to this date last year. Not sure of the nationality of any guests this year or last year. Hopefully any reduction in visits from Canadians can be covered by American guests this year.

I was going to take a trip to Canada this summer, but am not now as I’ve heard they are not fond of Americans up there right now. Not sure if that’s true, but why risk it. Plenty of places to go around here anyway.

FWIW we’re staying off Seashore Drive in Avon this week and just walking around the neighborhood every morning I’m seeing several driveways filled with Quebec and Ontario license plates.

RE: Rental availability

Stopped by the haulover in Avon this morning and saw tons of Canadian plates from our friends up north. Of course, I had to park the car and get some pics of the wind sports. So beautiful and windy today.

They don’t call it Canadian Hole for nuthin????

There will be a decline.

I was in British Columbia twice this spring. The folks there are OK with Americans on an individual basis but are a pissed off with our government. All US beer and wine pulled from the shelves. Certainly some will choose to vacation elsewhere.

Yes, there are plenty of Quebecois here this spring but keep in mind they booked their rentals probably a year ago. Not sure what they will do going forward - the OBX has the advantage that it is by far the cheapest and easiest destination for wind sports in the spring for someone coming from Canada so there is that.

There are plenty of condos available for rent in Toronto. Airbnb shows "over 1,000" for the week beginning 5/26.
_____________

Maybe now is the time to rent or even buy a vacation property in Canada.

"There are roughly 6,861 condos currently available for rent in Toronto, based on Apartments.com. Some sources like Reddit list 6,124 condos available for rent, while REALTOR.ca and Zolo list 6,552 and 6,541+, respectively."

From realtor.com - "Results: 7,770 Listings - Condos For Sale in Toronto"

I was in Canada last week when we crossed the border into the US we were the only car in line going south.

"Cost pressures and a weak dollar are reshaping travel plans

The financial strain of travel is more pronounced than ever, according to the Study, with 81 per cent of Canadian travellers reporting having changed their travel habits due to rising costs – a 12 percentage-point increase from last year
Some are choosing destinations closer to home (25%) or shortening their trips (22%), while one-in-ten (12%) travellers say they are shifting to alternative transportation, such as buses or trains, to offset expenses. " .Feb 25, 2025
