Tips for August

Tips for August

I am planning a trip to Kill Devil Hills in mid August and was hoping to get some pointers for the surf that time of year. Also, I have access to a kayak and was wondering if there are any opportunities in the Kitty Hawk Bay and if so, any tips and tactics for that area. Thanks in advance for your help! Tight lines!!!

For kayaking the sounds it's hard to beat a popping corks and basic jig. I use 1/8-1/4 oz depending on depth and conditions. I will always have 1-2 rods rigged with popping cork and another with just a jig head w/ a 4-5" paddle tail grub. I'll usually have a 4th rod with a large Zara spook as well. I remove the trebles and run two single hooks. I keep this rod at the ready in case I come across a school of drum. You'll probably also scare up some activity if you live line a finger mullet.

Kitty Hawk Bay: You can launch at the end of Tateway at the start of the Wright Brothers Multi Use Path to fish the northern end of Kitty Hawk Bay. There is good depth with grass all through that area. It may be busy in August and there isn't much parking. There is also a boat launch to the south around mid-bay.

If you have a day to spend... drive south. In my order of preference...

Hatteras Island, anywhere below Pea Island. It's all epic for drum and trout.

Little Bridge/Nags Head Kayak Launch. Can be epic for upper slot and just over slot drum. Also good for trout and flounder.

Oregon Inlet Fishing Center has a launch. I've not done nearly as good here as I feel I should have, but it's probably the best kayaking area I fish in regards to sight seeing and fun factor. I have caught medium sized trout, slot drum, and flounder up to ~18". There is so much different water there to fish it's unreal and there are islands, flats, channels, marsh, and the inlet to explore. Be mindful of currents, channels (BIG BOATS), and shallow areas. You'll definitely be using your paddle there some if you have a pedal drive, but it's all navigable in one way or another with a yak.

Thank you for your insight. That's all very good advice that I will follow!

And I'm sure you have a weather app you use, but I suggest bookmarking this page. It's for the marine forecast and is my go to source for planning kayak days. There's also Windy app if you trust it. I prefer the direct from NOAA report. I know my limits and if I see anything 10-15 kts then I plan on a location that shields me from the wind as much as possible given the direction. If I see 15+ kts, I plan on doing something else.
