Safe swim spots for Dogs (preferably not the beach

Looking for some safe swimming holes that dogs can enjoy. Preferably not the beach since the waves can get too rough. Thank you for any feedback.

My Aussie granddog (age 3) is afraid of the ocean waves, so my son takes her swimming in sound areas on HI. He just finds out which sound area is the least packed and picks that one. (Usually Avon or Hatteras Village) It's very easy for her.

Have fun!

At the south end of Wright Brothers Multi Use Path there is an ideal place to swim your dog. It includes a small public parking lot and a public deck shaded by beautiful old live oak trees. Drive west on W. Tateway Rd. in Kitty Hawk. Just before it ends turn right down a hill leading to the parking lot. You will find a narrow little beach there and it does not even get waste deep until about 100 yards out. Perfect place for kids also.

I was going to mention Windgrass Circle at the end of Tateway St in Kitty Hawk. There is a parking lot and a gazebo. You often see dogs there in the water. You can walk out about 30 feet and be in just 1-2 feet of water and the bottom is sandy- not muddy like the rest of the sound is.

Tateway is the street is at CRT screen's store on the bypass, around MP 4.5

Which town are you staying in?

Pretty much any place on the sound side. If you're on Hatteras Island I would think that Haulover/Canadian Hole would be great. Some dogs may like the surf. It's been some time since we carried a dog, but when we did they loved chasing the waves in and out. NPS does have a leash restriction though.

Canadian hole has outside showers for you dog too . You must have your dog on a leash of 10 ft or less legally , so if you let him run free watch out for the rangers they are known to ticket dog owner .

I have to say that this year we did not see a single law enforcement park ranger for the entire 3 weeks we were on Hatteras.None. not even seeing one of their trucks parked at the lighthouses the ramps on the beach, going up and down rt12....nothing.
Not that I am complaining at all but it struck me as odd since it was the start of the summer season and no one was around.

I swore off ever staying in Avon again because of all the dogs running around with no leash, no owner. The yard area at the condo we stayed at was so covered in dog poop it was pretty much impossible to walk around and get to the grills and canal without stepping in it.

All towns, and the National Park has leash laws. I personally wish it was enforced more. Not once did I ever see a Ranger the entire week in Avon. Nothing against the dogs - just the owners thinking laws don't apply to them.

I know - unpopular opinion.

In Avon this week and have not seen even a trace of what you describe above. Plenty of dogs but on leashes or in complete control of their owners. Next stop, Hatteras.

Well, it's unlikely the NPS would RIF their law enforcement officers. Hopefully the NPS uses their brains and lays off the rangers that were tasked at observing the amorous activities of Piping Plovers, and also the ones that close sections of beach to pedestrians because they thought some birds may be copulating soon.

Sounds like your ire should be directed at the condo owners/ renters rather than the NPS
