Lunch spots

Lunch spots

I live in Duck. Great town but not a lot of lunch spots that my wife and I enjoy. Our top spots are Poor Richards, Kill Devil Custard, Salt Box, Spankys and Johns. We don't eat seafood or fried food at lunch - or salads.

What would you recommend for something different - Corolla to Manteo.

I’m surprised John’s made your list considering your no seafood/fried food preference. Of the Kitty Hawk locals that I know, many of them go to Black Pelican and Barefoot Bernie’s. I hardly ever go out for lunch. I can make either a hamburger better than Five Guys or a sub better than Jersey Mike’s for under three bucks. Spanky’s is one of the few places that I go occasionally, but it’s already on your list.

RE: Lunch spots

Definitely add Country Deli, Kill Devil Grill and Simply Southern (across the bridge).

RE: Lunch spots

I am surprised John's made your list, I live 100 ft from it but don't go there a lot. Other than hamburgers what they do have is fried it seems to me.

Country Deli is always a good spot if you want a HUGE sandwich. They are moving across the street from the previous location, they need more room for the HUGE sandwiches.

RE: Lunch spots

Henry’s in KDH is good. Plus they serve breakfast late, so brunch/lunch. Thai Room is a good spot too.

Thai room has new owners for the first time in a long time. I have not been there to check out the new owners, but I will.

RE: Lunch spots

Thanks for all the suggestions. We're lunch people - rarely go out to dinner. I know John's doesn't really fit in but my wife occasionally likes to get their dolphin sub - I like their burger.

RE: Lunch spots

Try Tortugas' Lie in Nags Head. Open for lunch and dinner every day but Wednesday. Good, varied menu and a great atmosphere.

After vacationing OBX 36 years and living in Manteo 3 years, my go favorites are Darrell's, Kill Devil Grill, Barefoot Bernies and Henry's. Oh, and Jolly Roger, great lunches.

Darrell’s

I live in North KH so here's my lunch places. Hurricane Mo's has lunch specials every day. Sandtrap (at the golf course) is good. Black Pelican.

RE: Lunch spots

You have a bunch of outstanding recommendations here, but my top pick would be Country Deli in KDH.

I love love love the Tavern Dip sandwich at Sand Trap. The wife and I go there for dinner now and then (not on tuesdays) because the food is just good and it's never crowded (except on tuesdays).

if you are a lunch sandwich person and have not tried Country Deli then you are missing the biggest dang sandwich on the OBX. One sandwich feeds 2 easily. They are moving to a larger facility right now, it's just across the street.

RE: Lunch spots

Food Dudes Kitchen, Tortugas, Waveriders Deli, Country Deli, and 3 Tequilas are my usual spots.

RE: Lunch spots

Art’s for sure.

RE: Lunch spots

Those sandwiches at Country deli look ginormous.

RE: Lunch spots

I see a post on Tortuga's Facebook page from yesterday for an off-season special they do. On Tuesday's a 3-topping burger and fries is $8.99. I know you said you don't do fried foods, but their fries are the best on the beach.

RE: Lunch spots

Art's Place if you like burgers.....great breakfast, too!

RE: Lunch spots

I'm with Alexy. I've never had a bad meal at Darrell's.

RE: Lunch spots

Since you included Manteo, I'm a huge fan of TL's not too far down on the Left as you come into town. It's basically a diner that does everything I've ever had there well. I like the vibe. It's a favorite spot for Wanchese waterman and boat builders, etc. Breakfast is great too.

RE: Lunch spots

We also stopped at Cahoon's market, right across from Sam and Omies. They have a deli that we get great subs and wraps and take to the beach.

Trivia! TL's was a Hardees in the early 80's. I lived in Skyco and flew ad banners at the airport. I would stop there on the way for a breakfast biscuit.

RE: Lunch spots

Another pitch for Country Deli. Half the sandwich for lunch, half for a lite dinner. Great pickles too.

Sandtrap is sort of a hidden local place where you don't see a lot of tourists unless they are golfers. We like to go there around 6pm for dinner. I LOVE their Tavern Dip sandwich.
