Galleon Esplanade

Galleon Esplanade

I've seen a few pics around the internet of the Galleon Esplanade. Most of the ones I have seen are of a few exterior shots.

Just curious if anyone has any additional pics. From what I remember, that place was huge. Then again, I was but a wee lad at the time. I miss the uniqueness of shops like this and Newman's.

Everytime I witness the "originality" of yet another Wing's or one of its bastard offspring, I immediately long for days of yore...

Yeah, you think anybody'll be posting pics of Wings 30 years from now? NOPE !!!

I remember it well. It was somewhat big. It was a big courtyard with a toy store, houseware store, jewelry store and several others. The keystone store was The Galleon, a two story good quality clothing store. The Galleon store had a waterfall in front of it behind the stairway leading to its second floor. In the courtyard was the old Nags Head Nag statue that was famous for picture taking. Restaurant By George, one of the best the Outer Banks has ever seen was adjacent to the Galleon.

I remember some good meals from A Restaurant by George! Thumbs up ..and the pith helmets.

The Restaurant by George had some unique touches. Yes the Pith Helmets on the waiters. How about the tower where you could have drinks or dinner and overlook the beach scene. It only had one or two tables. I'll never forget my wife saying that I have to go in the Lady's Room and see it. We'll with nobody in there and her by the door I couldn't believe how nice it was decorated, just like a Harem from Arabian Nights. Cloth draped all over the place it looked like a Harem Tent, just beautiful. Oh well, only great memories now.

If I'm not mistaken each dining area had a different geographical theme. The Galleon was such a landmark and I was very sad to find that it had gone by the wayside. I started visiting OBX in 1973 and have been going each year ever since. It was such a quaint place before it became so commercialized and I mis the old pre-fast food two land Outer Banks of days gone by.

I was absolutely stunned when I found it had been torn down. I know places come and go but it was such a landmark to me.

That place was unique in many ways. It was around for about 20 years or so, so someone should have some pictures. Though in the pre-digital world, few people thought of using precious shots on a roll of film to take pictures of a shopping attraction. If there are any pictures, I'd love to see them.
