Dogs on the ferry to Ocracoke

When I was on Hatteras Island last weekend, I debated making a quick trip to Ocracoke, but I wasn't sure how to do that because I had my dog with me. Obviously people travel to Ocracoke with their pets all the time, but I was wondering what the process is for taking them on the ferry.
I would never leave him in the car in the heat or unattended, but are you allowed to have them on a leash somewhere on the ferry away from other people/pets? I haven't been to Ocracoke since 1999 and I was pretty young at the time, so I don't remember seeing anyone with animals. Has anyone had any experience with this? Island

RE: Dogs on the ferry to Ocracoke

I usually just stay in my car on the ferry, so it never occurred to me that the dog couldn't come along. The cars are packed so tight that my dog wouldn't have much room to move around in anyway, but it's a good question. Maybe call the NCDOT if no one on here can answer you

I would just leave the dog in the car with the windows down. There will be a nice breeze and should not be too hot for a dog in the car.

We always take our dogs over. We were told that we could walk around with them, however, it is so tight and they are golden retrievers. We just stay in the jeep. We have a wrangler and with the windows out, kids (and some adults) like to pet them through the back window. It makes their day! (the dogs that is) smiley

I always bring water also.

Take your dog, roll the windows down there will be a 6-11 knot breeze at all times Wink smiley
You are not allowed to have a running vehicle on a auto ferry per USCG rules. If you do not have water you can get water from the sink on the ferry.
I would not advise walking around with the dog on the deck since the vehicles are very tight during the summer but they are permitted as long as they are on a leash.

Yes, getting the dogs out on the ferry deck is no issue as long as they are leashed. Often the ferry is so packed you might not get your door open though! Obviously, pet owners are responsible for pet messes. For me and my pup, after 2 days on the road, we just stay in the truck and I try to catch a nap.

Dogs are OK. We take ours and she sleeps in the truck. But.... Have you ever been attack by sword yielding family that came from the car behind you? LOL Thumbs up

RE: Dogs on the ferry to Ocracoke

Thanks for all the responses everyone! It sounds like the best way to do it is staying in the vehicle with him for the entire ride since the cars are packed in so tight. So as long as it's breezy with the windows rolled down a bit, that's what we will plan on doing whenever we decide to head over. Thanks again! Island
