Oak Island

Oak Island

I've heard people refer to Oak Island as still OBX... anyone been there? How does it compare to Nags Head?

RE: Oak Island

My Sister In-Law from Pittsburgh goes there all the time, and always calls it the Outer Banks. I stopped correcting her years ago.

The key to this whole conversation is in what a person who loves Oak Island will tell you.

They say 'It is less crowded than Myrtle Beach' Well OK it is just like the OBX!

Nice place for sure, but a lot more quick paced than what you would expect to find on the real OBX.

RE: Oak Island

We LOVE the slow pace of OBX!! That's why we come here.

And if all I ever knew was Oak Island, I would have no desire to go to Nags Head.

BTW I think Nags Head / Kitty Hawk is too fast paced in the summer, which is why I stay in Corolla. Ignoring the drive up 12, once I am there I do nothing, so Corola is my summer spot.

In the offseason I come down to Nags Head.

RE: Oak Island

We are in South Nags head... and we rarely go out. It's the beach or pool for us smiley

RE: Oak Island

Oak Island is not even close to the OBX. It is about as far south as you can go and still be in NC... south of Wilmington and just north of Myrtle. It is a small/cozy island a little off the beaten path but nothing like the OBX is. They have a nice pier and a few small bar/restaurants but not much more.

RE: Oak Island

Thanks everyone! I was seeing if it was worth a try. We will continue our love for the "real" OBX Sun

RE: Oak Island

So is Cape Lookout the southern tip of OBX?

If you're looking for other places to try, and you like the peace and quiet, and OI isn't too far away - try Bald Head Island.

Ocracoke is the limit south of what most folks would call "OBX." Certainly up for debate, and probably would be argued more by locals. But for most vacationers, OBX is north to Carova and south to Ocracoke.

Most people in NC refer to the Outer Banks as Ocacoke and north. South of Ocracoke is referred to as SOBX for South Outer Banks or The Crystal Coast is another name used. NC tourism uses these terms but there is no REAL rule or boundary for the Outer Banks.

RE: Oak Island

I have seen the area around Cape Lookout referred to as "The Crystal Coast" or "The Core Banks"

RE: Oak Island

Outer Banks boundaries - IMHO - Hatteras Island and Ocracoke Island.

RE: Oak Island

I practically grew up there; my best friend's family had a house there on the waterway. Back then it was called Long Beach. It is not part of the Outer Banks. There are not a lot of restaurants on OI itself, but it is very close to Southport, a charming village which is becoming a foodies heaven!

RE: Oak Island

Long Beach, Yaupon Beach, Ocean Isle Beach, Sunset Beach, Holden Beach= Oak Island. They renamed it after the stigma of Hurricane Hazel followed it for a few decades. It is down near the NC/SC border, past Wilmington, NC.

There is no comparison to the Outer Banks.

RE: Oak Island

NC Native... I'd love to read you describe what you see as the differences. Not questioning you, just curious to know.

Do you mean the differences of the listed towns or how it compares to the OB?

RE: Oak Island

Always referred to that far-southern group as the Brunswick islands (ocean isle, Holden beach, long beach, oak island and Baldhead) Calabash is nearby to the South, that has family operated fresh and not over-cooked seafood! We have a friend in Holden beach and used vacation there a lot when kids were small. Holden never seemed to have much undertow, big seashells and sandollars. Kids now 20-27 yrs old and would rather do Hatteras island because its slower and more relaxing. I have 3 daughters and all love to fish and kayak as well. Not a bad drive from the mountains of western Va either. I usually skirt the west side of Dismal swamp and come in on I64 to Manteo. Sept trip is booked.

How it compares to the OB.

RE: Oak Island

The Outer Banks is fascinating & "Oak Island" is not. If you want that hard core one on one family time then who cares if you are on Long Beach or Carova? Although Carova might be too fascinating for some...or not.

RE: Oak Island

All I ever needed to know about Oak Island came from watching Jennelle on MTV's Teen Mom 2. Serious smiley
And yes, I just admitted to watching that show.
Haha Big grin

RE: Oak Island

Ok... call me an "Old fart" I'm sorry... but I don't understand the last two posts. I don get MTV and I'm not comprehending this. Please explain. Use an old style font if possible.

RE: Oak Island

That's funny because Jennelle was the first thing I thought of when I saw Oak Island. Jennelle Evans is in a MTV reality show called Teen Mom 2 and she lives on Oak Island. They show a lot of the area on the show, its looks beautiful.

RE: Oak Island

I have always stayed in Avon so I'm not sure about Nags Head or points north but i hear that Hatteras island is more laid back... Oak Island is even more laid back than Hatteras.

RE: Oak Island

How's the fishing in oak island compared to HI?
