turtle nest monitor devices

Read this on the N.E.S.T. (Network for Endangered Sea Turtles) today.
Are they really utilizing this? Does anyone know?
From what I read it would take a possible hatch window of upwards of 6+weeks to 1-3 days. If they are truly utilizing it that is incredible!!!

Cape Hatteras National Seashore - Nerds Without Borders has created nest monitor devices with a microcontroller, accelerometer, thermometer, and communications system inside a ping-pong ball (which, conveniently, looks a lot like a turtle egg). These sensors more accurately determine when hatching will take place—allowing the beaches to be closed for much shorter periods and giving researchers a heads up when hatching will happen.

I don't think this technology would be adopted at our Seashore Recreational Area since it would debunk long-held excuses for beach closures, and closely-held bonds between the NPS and the "stakeholders." The Citizen Public is not a stakeholder. We don't pay enough.

Kinda like the Circuit Court suspending operations to replace the Bonner. The safety, well-being, welfare and enjoyment of citizens is secondary to an Administration agenda.

Oh, well, let's get to fishing. While we are permitted. Where we can, where allowed, with unreasonable restriction.

And, DON'T spot burn. Jeez, we are squeezed in enough!

RE: turtle nest monitor devices

this is just a PR stunt.
The intention of the NERDS without borders project has been hijacked by a FOR PROFIT marketing scheme by a fellow with some deep pockets who SAYS he's all about the wildlife while hoping to dupe people into believing his motives are for us not him. There is simply no way the sensors are going to change the seashore plans in any way. See "Hatteras Island Ocean Center" on the web or facebook. He also plans on "selling tickets" to any turtle nest boil through a #200.00 "donation".

We can always hope. Perhaps if this is successful it will be considered at the 5 year review. What we really need is a sensor that reports when the eggs are dead and won't hatch.

by the way... isn't there supposed to be a citizens committee to legally interact with the NPS. This would be especially important leading up to the 5 year review.

That's one of the things. Beach closures for non-viable nests. You'd think there would be other ways too, like a probe to check for CO2 around the nest, etc.

God forbid someone suggest an idea to monitor turtle nests for viability and perhaps limit some of the excessive closure times for the nests! And to think that NPS is co-sponsor of the efforts is a glimmer of sensibility. And to further consider that a private party might actually profit from sharing a special act of nature - how horrifying! We all know that it is only the enviro extortionists who are supposed to profit - not an enterprising American with a clever idea.
I am so sick of the elitist attitudes of those who feel that only the chosen are allowed up close and personal with nature that I could puke. It's bad enough trying to close the beaches to the sportsmen who are many of the best conservationists but it is time for the administration of NPS to realize that the beach can be mixed usage as it was always intended to be!

Squid, you missed my point but I won't bother to try and explain. I too feel that mixed usage is just right. I just don't think this guy is in it for the people just himself period. I sure ain't no elitest buck. just a ordinary guy who happens to be into rehabbing animals. you obviously must be talking about someone who is not rolling up change to make the monthly bills. bet you taint. look at all the facts in a row and things just don't add up. Now I could be wrong and time will tell but the NPS was behind hearing us out about this stupid BS were dealing with now and they ignored every word. Im no tree hugger as many on this board know. sorry if you took offense to my opinion. last I looked I was free and over twenty one so maybe a dissenting opinion from yours is OK ?

K4,
I know that you are a rehabber and that is why I was surprised at your response to the monitors. I may be way too anxious to latch on to anything that will relate to reasonable access and proper critter protection.
As someone who has raised orphan squirrels as well as assisted my wife with raptor rescue who also likes to fish and generally enjoy the beauty of the beach I am as frustrated as so many other beach access advocates. I don't know the HIOC proprietor or his motivations but I do know that the NPS thought the monitors MAY have some merit.
Sorry that I resorted to name calling but I am just like you - searching for truth and knowledge!
