So disappointed with N.E.S.T. choice to post this

I love N.E.S.T. and their efforts to save and hatch turtles!! I've given them money. That said, I recently read this post on their FB page and it doesn't even make an effort to present the good people of Hatteras in a correct light. Instead, the article doesn't allow that there might be other valid reasons for limiting the beach closures. Here's the link.

oops, the link takes you directly to the Audubon page. You can find it on the N.E.S.T. page.

I reread that post. And think the same thing.... ??

RE: So disappointed with N.E.S.T. choice to post this

BB - not trying to hijack, but what I think I understand your informative post to be:

Not a facebook person, but even a rookie can see that they are allying themselves with NAS with this propaganda story post from back on 8/23. I hope this does not fracture the Local volunteer effort the way NAS divested itself of their NC Chapter.

That is a shame. A local, volunteer-driven group working for an honorable cause being associated with the NAS might not bring the best press. Did they poll the membership/volunteers before posting it? I am sure that volunteers like TimOBX, DennisFBG and StephVA can weigh in on this.

RE: So disappointed with N.E.S.T. choice to post this

Would like to read article you are referring to. I cannot find. Does it have a title? I looked on N.E.S.T.'s facebook page and couldn't find it, is that where it is? I don't facebook so maybe a hint as to where to look.

RE: So disappointed with N.E.S.T. choice to post this

jr Au & Ag - I too do not facebook, but the data is up there if you read the posts. Like you, sometimes I need my hand held when working this interwebz thingy Monkey

RE: So disappointed with N.E.S.T. choice to post this

I believe it is the same article that is posted on Audubons site that nest got it from. Up here in Indiana several of my local birding sites have picked up the same article. And unfortunately the propaganda runs thick and strong. I have been blackballed in several of the groups for standing against Audubons BS and my trying to show a different side of the story.
They don't understand NO ONE gets to see the birds here or access the beaches. They believe it is just an ORV and an out of control ORV group destroying the OBX and the birds and turtles.
I guess it is like religion and politics you can never convince someone of your side of the view.

RE: So disappointed with N.E.S.T. choice to post this

Found it on the Audubon site. For goodness sake it's propaganda by an Audubon official. And the comments section is another example of how not to win friends and influence people. I know you don't care what Audubon thinks but other people read those sites. People you might need on your side if you want to change things. Some of the comments are down right offensive.

I agree with everything you wrote. I am extremely surprised that NEST has aligned itself with such a volatile, unstable and unethical organization such as NAS. This is a major dent in their credibility as an inclusive organization. It brings into question exactly whether their motives are altruistic or financial (which is fine!- just be upfront about it). I would hope they will withdraw the post from their website/facebook, and offer a public explanation to their membership, and the supportive public at large, of exactly what their agenda is.

The hostility is the result of ordinary people who are at their wit's end on how to be heard and represented by a fair and reasonable government. I'm not justifying it, but it is inevitable.

RE: So disappointed with N.E.S.T. choice to post this

Hey Bluejay - To be fair, I didn't see any hostility in the article, just the usual dishonest spin and lies. Am I missing something? Was it in the comments area? Against my better judgement, and on a full stomach no less, I may have to go back and read that fiction again! Before I do, Can I guess?

-Supporters - (spin believers) thank goodness, "cars" don't belong on the beach, why can't you walk, you run over stuff, supported by feelings, yada yada yada

-Others - (truth believers) there has to be reasonable accommodation, these areas are closed to ALL, this is not an ORV issue, supported by data and facts, etc.

and then the usual hilarity ensues. Yes?

(btw - your "I survived the 2008 Fish Wars" logo design lives on - I think I owe you royalties!)

RE: So disappointed with N.E.S.T. choice to post this

I was referring specifically to the comments section, where I assume JRSG was making the reference of being offensive.

Wow, the fishing wars sticker lives? I thought it was "fishing riots;" did you change it?

RE: So disappointed with N.E.S.T. choice to post this

Like Bluejay, I think ppl are just frustrated with the skew with which the article is presented. Are there some offensive comments, yeah, but I've come to expect that given the circumstances.
No where (unless I missed it) did the article touch on closures to peds, just ORVS.
Author also mentions that only 2% of visitors using ORVS, and while i question that percent, I am also given to wonder if indeed it is only 2% then why do we need such restrictive vehicle closures.
Among the comments is one from a woman who says that (paraphrasing): she is happy about the ORV regulations because she was afraid her unleashed (say what?) dog would get hit, and the horses (say what, dux?) would be hit and that ORVS would continue to crush bird eggs with their tires
(shaking my head in disbelief), has she ever been there, is she confusing two areas?
Bizarro world.

wow, I guess I totally missed jrs' point. smiley with shades

Yes, it was fishing "riots", sorry I misquoted you. It may have made its way onto a T-shirt or two, as well. Big grin

RE: So disappointed with N.E.S.T. choice to post this

N.E.S.T. sent me the article through their FB page. They took it from the NAS's site. I meant I was really disappointed that N.E.S.T. would side with NAS in such a political issue and ignore the fact that many of their OBX members feel very differently. I don't believe this issue has anything to do with turtles, not one bit. N.E.S.T. needs to stay out of it.

Enough is enough ... The following are my thoughts and mine alone and I do not speak for or represent any organization.

IMO the NEST facebook page listed a link to the NAS site which had the article that you object to. A LINK ... many of the postings on the NEST facebook site are LINKS to other web sites where one can review the material and make their own decisions as to the content.

I am really disappointed that as you speak from your computer from up in Ohio and make a statement: "ignore the fact that many of their OBX members feel very differently." Just where are you getting your information to support that statement? Are you a NEST VOLUNTEER member? Have you talked to NEST VOLUNTEER members (and if so how many) to make that statement?

IMO if you think that the ORV issue at CHNS has nothing to do with nesting sea turtles at CHNS you need to do more research other than viewing the NEST facebook posts.

IMO your statements on the NEST facebook page point out your political agenda in regards to the NPS and NAS and NEST seem to be based on little knowledge of the Outer Banks and perhaps if you would join the ranks of the N.E.S.T. (Network for Endangered Sea Turtles) VOLUNTEERS you will have a better understanding of what the N.E.S.T. organization is all about.

As with many organizations to be able to talk the talk, you have to be willing to walk the walk and until that time IMO you "needs to stay out of it".

You spent a lot of time disociating and discrediting others' opinions based on where they live, as if your FBG IMO carries more weight. Frankly, I am sure your ATV joyrides and PR/canopy pictures on the beach give you a sense that you are "walking (ATVing) the walk." Good for you.

Simple questions, do you agree or disagree with NEST aligning itself with NAS? To what end? You are a (paid?) member with access the general public does not enjoy. Perks? Special consideration? Thoughts?

Never mind, don't respond. You are out of your comfort zone here.

RE: So disappointed with N.E.S.T. choice to post this

Nice to see someone who agrees with Capt. Caton regarding local knowledge.

Thanks for the reminder of why I seldom post on this cesspool.

"You are a (paid?) member with access the general public does not enjoy. Perks? Special consideration?
Thoughts?"

MY RESPONSE: LOL... paid, NO,... Perks, Yeah lots of smiles, ... Special consideration, Yeah aren't we ALL special? ...Thoughts? ...ya spend too much time thinking about me rather than doing don't ya?

My FBG??? Y'all really crack me up, REALLY. Now let's see we have hatterasnc and fortyfish who want all to believe that they are locals and know all there is to know about the Outer Banks and condemn those who they think may not be locals when in fact NEITHER of them are locals and appear to be ashamed of where they hail from.

As for Capt clown, yeah he is a local and makes all his friends proud of his stance on issues that enhance the economy of the Outer Banks. Confused

RE: So disappointed with N.E.S.T. choice to post this

Really don't care what you think but it's still comical that you and the Capt. think alike on local knowledge.

Following your logic that you have to be local to have insight, I would be willing to bet that hatterasnc and fortyfish have spent more nights on HI in the past 5 yrs then you Dennis, just saying

Patiently awaiting an answer.

I WAS going to read your post to me a couple of times and try to consider your point of view, IF I could get through the ego to do it. After this remark....why would I give your opinion another thought?

RE: So disappointed with N.E.S.T. choice to post this

Its not surprising the paid shill Dennis shows up spewing his authoritative and pro-govt view points, lol

RE: So disappointed with N.E.S.T. choice to post this

Looks like the Kaplan Koolaid has been consumed. The Hatteras Island for profit but not, Ocean Center propaganda has infiltrated NEST. for Me personally it's much worse than the NAS support. Near as I remember we have personally been part of rescuing at least twenty cold stunners. I guess NEST just lost us as Volunteers. Too bad but I can not support this fellow and his PR stunts and that is all it is. Even if the system worked it would take maybe five years for the park to even think about re-writing the plan. Leave the turtles out of you PR Crappola Eric.
