RE: New Inlet Bridge

My thought is that the bridge is finally on it's actual last leg, like build something quick, and they are going to give into the demands of the enviromentalists.

RE: New Inlet Bridge

There's an article on the bridge on pilotonline.com today. Doesn't say much.

RE: New Inlet Bridge

Rumor is SELC will accept parallel bridge for making New Inlet bridge go out in sound for 7 miles to Rodanthe. Serious smiley Not sure how a sound side bridge of any kind would not have the same negative impacts as they claimed the Mid Currituck bridge would have caused. I think it's a trick. Angry smiley

RE: New Inlet Bridge

I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop

RE: New Inlet Bridge

My hope is that the SELC realizes that they are going to lose on the parallel Bonner, and are trying to broker a deal to save face.

I wouldn't mind an elevated causeway the entire length from the Bonner to Rodanthe, that runs in the right of way of the current RT12. I think that would be a win - win, and a better alternative than patchwork bridges throughout Pea Island.

RE: New Inlet Bridge

I crossed the bridge about 2:30 and the ocean was over washing the island.

RE: New Inlet Bridge

I wouldnt mind it either. Would be great if they left the pavement (or part of it) so you could still bike thru those 7 miles which won't have road access.

RE: New Inlet Bridge

1 mile of elevated roadway costs 20-30 Million. Grade level Bituminous concrete on a sand bed....Not so much.

It would be covered in sand in no time. Rt 12 requires almost constant work to remain open thru the refuge. FWS has already said they have no money to maintain what would be the old rt 12 if/when some sort of bridge solution happens around PINWR.

So the current projected cost to replace the Bonner is about $215,000,000.

The distance between the south end of the Bonner and the Chicamacomico Life Saving Station is 13 miles. Even using the middle of your estimate at $25,000,000 per mile of causeway, the total cost of the project would be $540,000,000. That is still about a half of what the 19 mile long bridge would cost. I would believe that maintaining a land based causeway would be less than one completely over water.

I know you are correct...just wishful thinking on my part.
