Has civility slipped alot?

Not just on this forum, but forums in general, has anyone besides me noticed that responses to opinions, likes, dislikes etc. seem to be met with more snarky, mean & generally just not nice remarks?
Everyone can agree to disagree, but it seems that more & more, a lot seem to want to disagree in a nastier mode.

The old saying of "the more I know people, the better I like my dog" seems to be more true all the time.

Now someone can respond about they hate dogs if they want to.

Yes, very much so. Any site with a lot of users will have that. You cast a big net, no telling what you will catch. Just have to ignore the jerks.

RE: Has civility slipped alot?

Often it comes from anonymity...that people will write things that they'd never consider saying in the here and now of real life.

I used to be an Admin on several Photography discussion forums...for our purposes we had guidelines posted, and one biggie was no politics or religion.

In addition, I feel that the 24 hours "news" cable tv and radio programs that err on the side of hyperbole all add to the general lack of civility.

P.S. Must add that the written word is easily misconstrued for a variety of reasons - one of which is the lack of facial cues. It is so easy to take brevity for unpleasantness, etc.

Yeah ... let him that hath no sin cast the first stone:

"Seatbelt enforcement might have been started for safety in md, but it is used for income now. In our town they will practically call out the swat team for a seatbelt violation , yet the law about children wearing helmets on bicycles is completely ignored."

RE: Has civility slipped alot?

Sure seems that way. Anyone can log on behind a keyboard a cast some vile threats and insults. The world has become...actually mankind has become un-kind and getting worse. I know I'm not at ease like I used to for our country as certain murderous groups are killing thousands of innocents like it's free. No doubt in my mind they are here and growing. Angry smiley

RE: Has civility slipped alot?

I can only say you should have been here in 2004-6 when you did not need to register. You could post with anonymity and flame at will. When they made everyone register many left since they could no longer hide behind the garbage can in the dark. It's much nicer here since then.

RE: Has civility slipped alot?

It's part of why I'm getting really tired of Facebook, and that's people I know. It's all politics, and it's polarizing people in ways I've never seen before. It isn't just "oh that guy is a ( political party) we don't agree on certain things." it's flat out mud slinging, hate and vitriol. It's very upsetting.

RE: Has civility slipped alot?

Unfortunately it mirrors society outside of forums. It seems people have just become more angry and rude and entitled. There are stil some people who are pleasant though.

RE: Has civility slipped alot?

Just ignore them.

PERIOD

They will never understand and if they do not care enough to respect others with out prompting they are probably not people I would like anyway.

Case in point at our American Legion there are several unit songs that are played every friday for remembrance of certain units that are heavily represented by the membership.
We all just quietly raise a toast and stand.
There are many associate members who never served that have no idea what it is about that continue to laugh curse carry on ect. They are just ignored, nothing is said to them.Sometimes they get it and if they are too stupid to realise it then they are too far beyond hope.

I've always been more a cat person myself Laughing smiley Sorry I couldn't resist. I've noticed it too. It truly is a different world now.

RE: Has civility slipped alot?

All I know is that I'm sick and tired of you self-righteous, Bible belt Christians trying to tell us respectful heathens that you don't like our sarcastic remarks. Nothing messses up a friendly discussion more than you mamby pamby left wing weenies who start sniveling because someone has a different opinion, unless, of course it is a radical right wing wacko who will tolerate no differing viewpoints.
There's just too few of us middle of the road, tolerant folks who simply wish to share the truth and knowledge that we have learned from years spent in places of higher learning such as universities and barrooms. I have no time for civility, since I semi-retired I'm too busy to be civil and it also may give a false impression that you like someone. Leave that civility at home and let the nasty news roll! Peace, love, fellowship.......borrrriiiing!

Who sez you don't have a sense of humor. Is there any room left in the bunker. I will provide my own TP, bread and milk.

Let him in, then slap a padlock on the outside of the doors. Bread milk and TP won't last forever. Big grin

Welllllllllllll as long as you are not present. You were the government contract employee, so chances are you will over order TP, milk and bread that will last for zillions of years. I would also be subject to viewing your picture for whatever award it was that you received and and hearing endless stories of how you alone saved the world.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, oh yeah, let see this post was on civility wasn't it? .... Laughing smiley

RE: Has civility slipped alot?

It's part of why I'm getting really tired of Facebook, and that's people I know.

I've defriended (unfriended?) half the people on FB and are down to a whole 10 people. I'm way, way on the introvert side. I'm pretty much just on there for cast iron cooking groups.

On FB ...

I do not care to know the minutia and drivel of your life.

Someone having a great time does not stop what they are doing, take pictures, and immediately post to a web site.

I definitely do not want to see another close-up picture of your face. Are you really that stuck on yourself?

I do not care to reply to a cryptic post that is intended to receive a multitude of “what happened” and “are you o.k.” replies, only to find out that it is some trivial event.

Do not keep asking for money. That is very crass.

I really don’t care where you are right now.

I really don’t care that you have a beer or wine in front of you.

I really don’t care what restaurant you are at and that you have a plate of food in front of you.

I really don’t care what game you are playing.

I really don’t care that you went for a run, bike ride, or walk.

I really don’t care that you like everything.

I really don’t need play-by-play of a sporting event you are watching. I would watch the game if I wanted to watch it

I really don’t care about your political leanings especially when supported by self-serving trash.

I do not care about your position on gun control.

RE: Has civility slipped alot?

Paul, you are simply further evolving to the typical Yankee from Mass completely self-centered and indifferent to others. You aren't by chance of German heritage? Except for those Germans from Bavaria, who really know how to party, most are never happy unless they are in pain or can watch the suffering of others! Don't fight it just go with the flow.
Dennis, IPAs or single malt will get you into my bunker ..... milk will get you tossed!
I actually had more than one neighbor with back yard bomb shelters. They probably abandoned them since I left town and took by bad attitude and arsenal with me.
What a beautiful day .... I HONESTLY hope all of you miserable rabble enjoy it to the utmost!

Couple more..

Photos of people with tongues hanging out of their mouth.
Photos of people's kids and more photos of their kids. Child predators love that.
Opening up a post with OMG RIP!
Never using the edit tool.
Posting a photo with Al Sharpton in it for any reason.

RE: Has civility slipped alot?

I've been on here less than a week and have had a wonderful experience. Everyone has been so helpful and gracious. We will be coming to OBX for the first time this year. Thanks to everyone here. I did have one sarcastic comment but I didn't sweat it.

RE: Has civility slipped alot?

Com'n Charlie, we're from Philly ....sarcasm is us! I wish I could visit with you while you are on the banks. I think you guys will love it ... and I can STILL talk about the Phillies all day!

Only if the frig is new, does not smell and guaranteed not to need service ... and filled with 2 percent milk.

RE: Has civility slipped alot?

Dennis - you have GOT to get off this milk thing. Unless you are an infant, adolescent or have osteoporosis you have no business touching milk! What are you a damn dairy farmer?

In my young Navy days, I yearned for those liquor runs to the Caribbean and was quite proud of my record setting 25 rum and coke Dixie cup drinks at the Gitmo EM club Christmas of 66.

Now an occasional fuzzy naval, but a cold glass of 2 percent milk and oreo cookies with the younger Grandchildren is my fix.

It is reported that when we took a sea cruise to Alaska the cruse line had to being a dairy cow on board to meet my needs.

Does that mean no invite to the bunker?

RE: Has civility slipped alot?

Funny, back in the day when the rum industry had free rum bars at the San Juan Airport, I'm guessing 1969, my flight was delayed for a snow situation in Philly. I remember that they touted 50+ different drinks and the last thing I remember was one of the bartenders asking me if I thought the delay would be much longer because he was fairly sure I could taste every drink that they offered. FUZZY, hell I was warped for three days. I was never desirous of a rum drink after that.
I can overlook the milk .... you failed to mention oreos in previous post!
