RE: Has civility slipped alot?

It's part of why I'm getting really tired of Facebook.....

You ain't a kiddin'. I now just scroll very quickly through, skipping the one friend who posts 25 pictures A DAY of her daughter and the outfit du jour, the well meaning dog rescue lady who posts graphic abuse pictures without warning (and then my day is RUINED), and the rest of the general drivel and selfies.

Facebook has quite a few nifty tools that are poorly advertised that help make the experience more enjoyable and less frusturating. For starters, you can always "unfollow" people. Not to be confused with "unfriend", you remain contacts, but none of the stuff they post shows up in your news feed. I've done this with pretty much every person I'm friends with that talks politics. Another handy trick is to click on the little down arrow in a post you don't want to see and select "Hide post", then select "Show less from this person". FB will get smart as to what stuff you want to see and don't want to see and will selectivily post it to your news feed.

I do this as well, Boom (I don't object to political discussion, but it makes me crazy to see things posted as fact that were featured on UrbanLegends or Snopes.com, like, five years ago), but I've recently had a few snarky comments about "not being good enough to follow". It turns out there was an app released last month that shows who unfriended you and when.

Not that this is a reason to suck it up and see objectionable stuff in your feed, but it's no longer as anonymous as it once was. Thumbs down

The trolling doesn't bother me, they are easy to ignore.

What I find disturbing with the internet are these "echo chambers" that have been created. People go online with their views (right or wrong) and find other like minded people. They spout off, and their views are echoed back to them by others which justifies their view as being "correct". Anyone that presents any alterior view is piled up and and shunned away. What you end up with are highly opinionated people who genuinly belive their opion to be fact and refuse to absorb any contridicting evidence.

People validating each other is quite prevalent....and scary sometimes. "I read it on the internet, so it must be true." Or "look at all these people who think the same thing, well d@mn, we must be right."

I swear, some people should need a license to operate a computer.

What your referring to is confirmation bias. People naturally seek to confirm their beliefs and stop searching once they believe they have established it as a fact based on information they gather from books, others, or the Internet. People have always been wired to seek this. It takes a lot of discipline, curiosity, and an open mind to continually seek opposing views and challenge your bias. The Internet makes it to easy to confirm beliefs and stop being curious.

I have no problem with people expressing opposing views from mine. I don't really have a problem when people express opposing views from mine in a passionate way. When I notice someone intentionally making digs among the debate to stir the pot, that's when I choose to ignore their posts and move on to other threads. It gets more complicate when they "hook" others into the stirring of the pot....we then move away from the original debate and now are just simply being mean and poking jabs at others.

I can only say you should have been here in 2004-6 when you did not need to register. You could post with anonymity and flame at will. When they made everyone register many left since they could no longer hide behind the garbage can in the dark. It's much nicer here since then.

My husband is a firm hater of Facebook for that reason. He says folks get on there and run their mouth all big and tough but doesn't have the nerve to say it to your face.

I think civility has remained the same, just that we have more avenues to be exposed to so many other people we typically wouldn't be in contact with. No long are you just exposed to people in your immediate surroundings, but now the entire world's population that is online.

As a high school teacher, we deal with social media drama on a daily basis. It gets old because these kids, as do many adults, think social media is the end-all.

The internet is a great tool for both people doing good and those that use it to do bad. Just like anything out there...
