Hatteras Island Trip

My wife and I rolled into Buxton about 1:15 pm and as our tradition had lunch at Angelo's pizza after an unusually, at least for us, taxing ride here. Rain, heavy traffic, and four traffic accidents (three on Interstate 95) increased travel time to over 6 hours from Leechburg to Glen Allen in Virginia where we stayed over night on Friday evening. This morning traffic on 95 and 295 was still heavy with some very creative driving which got better after hitting 460. Bridge traffic at 12:20 pm was little to none but still had a few displays of aggressive driving techniques. Prior to leaving Buxton we stopped at the lighthouse for a yearly beach driving permit. Keeping with tradition we had to check the weather at the airport in Frisco. I originally thought WOW they must have had a really bad winter but the wind sock was just not put up for service yet. Disclaimer........I am not a photographer just a guy with a camera that likes to take pictures of stuff.

Next stop was Frisco pier. I am amazed it is still standing but looks worse every time I see it.

Went to Slash Creek to see how construction is going. Still some work to do.

After unpacking and a shopping, Sonnys in Hatteras Village was the place for dinner and a very tasty blackened mahi was the choice then off to check out the beach. Northern end of ramp 49 looking north. The usual closures are still there.

A pic of sunset from the new access road from ramp 49 to ramp 44. That's what the sign says and will check it out soon to see how far north it goes.

5/8/16, We woke to clear skies and warm temps and my wife wanted to go to Sonnys for breakfast for Mothers day because I didn't get a chance to cook any of the 6 lbs of bacon the night before that we had brought from home. I know, I know, now you're thinking THAT is a lot of bacon but, if you crunch the numbers, 2 people, for 2 weeks ahhhh .... after some quick math in the head ummmm...... it comes out to exactly...... 6 lbs of bacon. Getting back on track, headed to Frisco tackle for some bait, which all they had was shrimp, then to the northern end of ramp 49.

Took the new interdunal road up to the newly installed ramp 48 access just to check the new road out. The deer back there aren't very wary of people.

We got to the beach right before high tide and picked a spot to set up. Fishing was slow on the falling tide where we were but heard it was much better else where. Pic at ramp 48 looking north towards the point.

The water was fairly dirty with floating grass fouling the line and a northern flowing current that required more weight than normal to hold bottom. Pic showing vehicles at the point from ramp 48.

We had supper at the Captains Table then to Dillons for some mullet. Didn't have any there either so off to ramp 43, 44, and the point area just to nose around. Gotta love the looks of that lighthouse.

5/9/16, Woke to sunny skies and low to mid 70 temps. Had breakfast in this morning then to ramp 55 for the day. Light winds early off the water increasing throughout the day. I still got a sock pic from 49.

The beach at 55 is still very narrow during high tide and is impassable by vehicle toward the southern end even at low tide. Good thing is there wasn't alot of people. Pic at 55 looking north.

The water was cleaner and more calm than yesterday with much more boat traffic.
