Cobia Closure???

Cobia Closure???

Maybe I didn't see this right (actually hope I missed something), but is there going to be a closed season on recreational cobia for the entire year of 2017?

And if this is a fed action (federal waters), will I be able to go out with a guide in NC close to shore?

Feds DID close it for recs effective 1-1-17

NCDMF web page has the latests rec and cobia fishing as closed as of 12-2-16

I would call NCDMF at 252-808-8025 and ask Tricia Smith

Holy cow...thanks Alexy

RE: Cobia Closure???

I sent you a detailed PM. COBIA is only shut down in Federal Waters (Beyond three miles). Probably 90% of Cobia are caught in State Waters. Individual States are not required to implement Federal Regs. Lasst year both NC and VA disagreed with the Feds and kept the Cobia season open longer with reduced Bag Limits. Hopefully the same in 2017.

Thanks, Pickle. Will be checking on how the state of NC plays this.

RE: Cobia Closure???

Here it is, Season = May 1st to August 31st. Keeper = 36" Minimum Size. Bag Limit = One per Angler and 4 Per Boat per trip.

RE: Cobia Closure???

I know all people want to do is talk about the MFC's decision on commercial shrimping but they also passed this for the 2017 cobia season:

Thanks for the call today about the cobia regulations that were passed last week at the MFC meeting in Wilmington. Below is the motion that was passed and will become the regulation as soon as a proclamation can be made.
2017 Cobia Recreational Season and Management Measures Motion by Joe Shute to start the 2017 North Carolina cobia season May 1 and run through Aug. 31 with a 1-fish-per-day-per-person possession limit; a 4-fish-per-vessel maximum possession limit for private and charter; and a 36-inch fork length size limit, seven days per week. The charter boat limit of 4-fish-per-day includes the captain and mate, as well as customers. All cobia harvested shall be recorded and tagged at a current or future NC Citation Station location. Length and weight shall be recorded to help provide a more accurate harvest by number and weight for future reference. Second by Chuck Laughridge. Motion carries 5-0 with 3 abstentions
