Removing Old Dixie?

... our fight for freedom from the British the Civil War started over unfair taxes being levied upon the merchants of the south ...

Took high school American history south of the Mason-Dixon line, eh? Theeth smiley

Sure Paul, 12 years of school within 15 miles of Independence Hall. Philly is a renowned southern stronghold. No, I believe what I said about what started the Civil War is correct. What gave Lincoln the eventual support that he needed was the emancipation issue. I had the advantage of going to school prior to the time of revisionist history became routine.
Since living in the south I do have a much better understanding why many "rebels" don't feel all warm and fuzzy about the self righteous yankee.

But I suspect that symbol means different things to you so I am willing to let it go for your sake. How about some reciprocity? Or does that not work with you?
...

I don't think anyone is seriously trying to "ban" the confederate flag. They are talking about taking it down from government buildings and some companies are making a business decision not to sell merchandise with the flag depicted on it. As a private citizen you can fly the confederate flag or a peace sign flag and that won't change.

Outer Banks Local Issues & Local Politics
A forum for discussing the serious issues facing the Outer Banks. Everything from beach nourishment to local politics can be debated with people who know their stuff.

There is no room at the Inn for this contrived "controversy.". Pray

Hmmmmm..... A Most political topic IMO. And here in lies the problem with the idea of removing the flag. In a "knee-jerk" rush for government to be Politically Correct they take down a Historic symbol of Southern Heritage only AFTER pictures surfaced of one hate filled person posing with the Stars and Bars. To illustrate how absurd the effort to be "PC" really is don't stop at removing the flag, also remove Confederate reference to any statue, any memorial, any tombstone and blast the side off Stonewall Mountain, GA. You can't erase history folks. This society IS wedging itself into a corner by trying to please all sides. What happened to majority rules?

I can't disagree with your points Buckeye (except I am a Nittany Lion), but this thread is not going anywhere in a good direction. My opinion. Let's put it aside.

One of my thoughts visiting my wife's family in VA for the first time almost 30 years ago was "do these people know the Civil War ended 125 years ago and they lost?" Theeth smiley

Interesting how some want to give their opinion and then ask for thread to be locked.

As far as the south "losing" I say we all lost. What did we gain? A huge, over reaching government, that is inefficient, wasteful, and corrupt. This started when States lost their rights. To question a southerners heritage and mindset in this way is insulting. I, like many in the south, have personal hand written letters from distant past relatives that fought in the late unpleasantness. Trust me, they were not fighting to protect the disgusting institution of slavery.

Don't call me racist. I have more friends of color and of diverse race and culture than most anyone. No, I do not fly any confederate flag at my home.

Fishingeek and OF........IF you are referring to me in your posts you got it wrong. I would love for the thread to continue, however I thought about the rules of the board and agreed with others that this topic was not about the Outer Banks and did not belong in this forum; and the thread was unfortunately getting political.

Wonder how long before they legislate against Civil War reenactment groups playing the role of the CSA.

Went to a large WWII event here in MA several years ago. The group that was the Germans were really neat. Might as well just ban them, too?

The German group is below. I was toying with the idea of joining until I saw the cost of authentic uniforms. Wow! Dropped that thought quickly. smiley

Remember the classic German WWII submachine gun (MP40)? I overheard someone saying he had an authentic one, and he said how much he paid. OMG smiley

This is only the beginning.

Farrakhan and others say " We Need to Put the American Flag Down".

Gone With the Wind is already a target.

Wonder why all step mothers don't get together and ban Cinderella?

...well people...for all it is worth..."the war of the rebellion" was fought over states rights...and was deeply rooted in the Missouri compromise and the Kansas-Nebraska act (look them up for yourselves)...could go back to a passage in the constitution that set slaves free in 1800 (look it up for yourselves)...anyway the battle flag of the army of northern va has been hijacked (as has the navy ensign of the confederacy)...and now is indeed a symbol of hate...it was hijacked by the klan in the 1920's...it was flown over the Alabama state house in 1960 (segregation today, tomorrow, and forever (George Wallace)...and has been used by hate mongers the world over as a symbol of resistance...it has a much deeper meaning for those of us who understand the "war of yankee aggression (as some of us call it)"...and who we are today.....

I'm pleasantly surprised at how polite the discussion is. I'm learning a thing or two. I went to school in the 70's and in social studies we learned more about native Americans, Eskimos, the herring gull, and Ghana than we did about the civil war.

I was born a Yankee, but have lived more than half my life below the mason-dixon line. I do feel more at home in the south. I dont own a rebel flag.

I love West Virginia and usually try to not be critical of it. But I decided I just couldn't keep quiet any longer about a Parkersburg woman calling 911 because her neighbor was flying a confederate flag. An unbelievable newspaper story I had with my morning coffee.

We have never had a confederate flag at our house, but this 911 call was pure ignorance.

There was a controversy last year about a resident of a NJ suburb hanging the ISIS flag. Lots of talk about whether it was ISIS or Islamic.

To my mind there is a major difference between displaying an ISIS flag and Old Dixie. Maybe that's my xenophobia showing, but that's the way it is.

Just my opinions...Sad that there is so many more larger and important issues facing our Nation, but our elected officials are not tackling them. Regardless of ones personal feelings as to what the flag represents, it is part of the history of our Nation. You simply can't erase history because you or a group of people are offended by it. What is next...let's bulldoze Gettysburg and build a golf course? Condos would look good at the site of the Bunker Hill monument. Maybe we should remove the oil spewing battleships at Pearl Harbor, so we don't pollute the ocean any further. Tear down the Alamo and the Freedom Tower. Our Nation is to worried about feelings of individuals and groups of people.

Let us remove the Confederate Flag from flying in places but allow people to step and stomp on the American Flag as a freedom of speech. More double standards and political correctness.

Even if you remove the race issue for a moment.
The flag was used by an entity that hated the United States and killed more Americans than the Taliban or ISIS could ever hope to. That should be reason enough for America to despise it.

OF course the Stars and Stripes represents an entity that interred thousands of it's citizens because of their particular race and the country that the flag flew over had 12 presidents that were slave holders but that doesn't bother you ? It's a piece of cloth. The ideology behind the symbols is what needs to change.

Everything the white people does is illegal. Except for politicians of course.
The civil war was about taxing cotton, not slavery. History is rewritten as always.

Yes, Fortyfish, it does bother me. I am glad that part of our history is behind us and that the 34 star flag that flew over the slave holding states was retired 140 years ago.

I just dont get it. Sure take the flag down from the SC capital grounds. Walmart, Amazon and other retailers removed any item with reference. Try for more gun control, etc. How does that fix anything. If he did not have a gun he would have just made a pipe bomb. What no one wants to address is the kid probably had parents that taught this to him and I am betting he is mentally ill and in this country we have very limited resources for diagnosing and treatment.

And what about all the monuments of those that served the South during the Civil War being defaced with "black lives matter" spray painted on them. Does not seem anyone is up in arms about that.

I was under the impression that all lives mattered. I could go on but it would probably end up coming across as totally non-PC.

ETA: Glad I already have my copy of Gone with the Wind on DVD.

What about the states that use a version of this flag within their own state flags? Do they now have to adopt new designs?
