| I have a non-catching report. I haven't taken the kayak out, yet, but have spent a few hours over 3 days on the beach in South Nags Head. Saturday I was using shrimp and caught a very small fish. Surprisingly I felt the bite, but it was only about 3" long. I don't even know what it was. I think it may have been a small pigfish. It was so small it was tough to identify, but it wasn't a pinfish or lane snapper that's for sure. I threw metal at sunrise on Monday for a bit and got nothing. Yesterday I soaked some fresh finger mullet and shrimp and... nada. I threw metal a bit just before sunset and snagged a glass minnow. The beach here in front of the house isn't the best for fishing though. There are no troughs or drops. This weekend I'm going to try and get the kayak out up in Nags Head for a bit and see what happens.
On a related note, I went to the OIFC kayak launch with the net to get some mullet to freeze for the upcoming weeks. I use a heavy brine solution in my Yeti and throw them in and they freeze solid in minutes. It's fantastic. The odd thing was that 1/3 or more of the mullet I caught had visible injuries from being chomped on. A lot had scars, fresh wounds, and some even had mouth marks around their entire body like they were in a fish's mouth and escaped. It was pretty wild. I have seen that before here and there, but never on so many in one day. I guess I need to get over there to do my fishing. The puppy drum bite has been good back there so I've heard.
