Fishing reports

Fishing reports

The reports are slow around here. Has anyone been doing anything, personally? I follow the usual sources online, but haven’t seen much from the sound except for some occasional drum, skinny trout, small flounder, the normal tackle shop reports, etc. Are any flounder of good size showing up? Last year I got a 21” in Nags Head and I’ll be down for the Fall in a few weeks and hope to get a doormat! I have the rods rigged and ready for the Fall trout run as well. Getting stoked!

RE: Fishing reports

Isn't recreational Flounder closed?

RE: Fishing reports

Yep, closed except for last 2 weeks of Sept. It's a shame too, because I caught quite a few, including 3 REAL nice ones, back in mid July.

Squid Pro Quo

Yup. I’ll be fishing for them out of season for a bit and hope to have something figured out for when it opens.

RE: Fishing reports

Soon the water temperature will start dropping and the migration patterns will kick in. Give it a couple more weeks.

RE: Fishing reports

You can still get decent trout soundside. I find the mornings are far better than the afternoon bite due to the lower water temps.
Just find a good hole or structure and work it.

RE: Fishing reports

I have a non-catching report. I haven't taken the kayak out, yet, but have spent a few hours over 3 days on the beach in South Nags Head. Saturday I was using shrimp and caught a very small fish. Surprisingly I felt the bite, but it was only about 3" long. I don't even know what it was. I think it may have been a small pigfish. It was so small it was tough to identify, but it wasn't a pinfish or lane snapper that's for sure. I threw metal at sunrise on Monday for a bit and got nothing. Yesterday I soaked some fresh finger mullet and shrimp and... nada. I threw metal a bit just before sunset and snagged a glass minnow. The beach here in front of the house isn't the best for fishing though. There are no troughs or drops. This weekend I'm going to try and get the kayak out up in Nags Head for a bit and see what happens.

On a related note, I went to the OIFC kayak launch with the net to get some mullet to freeze for the upcoming weeks. I use a heavy brine solution in my Yeti and throw them in and they freeze solid in minutes. It's fantastic. The odd thing was that 1/3 or more of the mullet I caught had visible injuries from being chomped on. A lot had scars, fresh wounds, and some even had mouth marks around their entire body like they were in a fish's mouth and escaped. It was pretty wild. I have seen that before here and there, but never on so many in one day. I guess I need to get over there to do my fishing. The puppy drum bite has been good back there so I've heard.

RE: Fishing reports

I'll be down there Oct 8-15. Probably not bringing the kayak since it is a family trip and space will be limited, even though it would be prime kayak fishing season. Will fish the sound on calm days and surf on days the sound is hammered by east winds, so I need to stay mobile. Hopefully good reports will be coming in by then.

Took the kayak out today at the Little Bridge. Caught about 20 finger mullet in no time and tried them as well as artificial near the bridge and causeway. No real bites. Moved a bit and was dropping live finger mullet down on a Carolina rig off of docks with 1/2 oz weight and picked up a short drum. Caught a 24” drum on the next cast. Ended up with 6-7 drum. Three were keepers with the 24” being the only one worth keeping. The rest were short. Water temp was 85! A bit too warm still.

Wow! You and dhart take the cake and I love reading your posts. I fished for a bit off of the dock in Frisco with sand fleas we grabbed yesterday. Nothing! Keep us up on what you do!!!!!

Thanks. Today is a disc golf day. Once the weather starts to cool I’ll be swinging down towards your neck of the woods. I prefer fishing to the south, but will wait another few weeks and then I’ll start doing some serious trips. I’ve already taken the first 10 days of October off in anticipation. :-)
